EARTH HOUR GUYANA – 2016
Earth Hour 2016 in Guyana is going to be powered by renewable, clean, environmentally friendly solar energy!
This year, Guyana’s Earth Hour activities seek to build awareness and re-engage society about how important the need is to adopt renewable forms of energy as Guyana moves to secure its energy future and support global efforts to #ChangeClimateChange.

SURINAME’S EARTH HOUR ACTIVITIES 2016
Concept
In the two weeks prior to Earth Hour on March 19th, 2016, the action ‘Make You Own World Light’ will be held. During this activity, the ‘Earth Hour Team’ will visit twenty schools in Paramaribo-Center. Every pupil will be guided in making their own world light. The goal is to have all pupils take their worldlight with them to the Independence Square on March 19, where Earth Hour will be celebrated.
During Earth Hour, when it is dark outside, the Independence Square will be filled with al these ‘world light’. This way everyone contributes in this activity.

Monique Pool, founder of the Green Heritage Fund Suriname, has been announced as one of the finalists for CNN Heroes. Monique has rescued, rehabilitated and released hundreds of sloths back to the forest since 2005. She is passionately involved in numerous conservation efforts in Suriname and an important partner to WWF. Monique has been monitoring the Guiana dolphin for over ten years and is generating public excitement about marine conservation. The Living Blue Planet Report
Populations of marine mammals, birds, reptiles and fish are in serious decline worldwide according to WWF’s Living Blue Planet Report. “in the space of a single generation, human activity has severely damaged the ocean by catching fish faster than they can reproduce while also destroying their nurseries. Profound changes are needed to ensure abundant ocean life for future generations” says Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International. Read more

Monitoring the impact of gold mining on forest cover and freshwater in the Guiana Shield
assesses the impact of gold mining across Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and the Brazilian State of Amapá. Coordinated through the French Forestry Agency (ONF)’s ‘REDD+ for the Guiana Shield’ Program with co-funding from WWF Guianas, the study uses appropriate satellite data to assess gold mining impacts on forest cover and freshwater. The analyses and report also compares, spatially, the impacts across the region. Read more

Biodiversity for Sustainable Development in Guyana
Georgetown, 21 May 2015: Whether we’re conscious of it or not, biodiversity plays an invaluable role in our everyday lives. We could not exist without it! Each species has its own function in the ecosystem and together biodiversity provides the goods and services which sustain us: clean water and air filled with oxygen, food (fish, fruits, nuts, bushmeat), pollination for crops, regulation of rainfall, economic opportunities from ecotourism and a well-regulated wildlife trade, health products, coastal protection and climate change mitigation. May 22, 2015 is the International Day for Biodiversity and WWF Guianas is pleased to recognize this globally significant day which this year is being celebrated under the theme: Biodiversity for Sustainable Development.
