Why do your Books Need Integrated Word Definitions?

Customer Satisfaction. With Lexiteria's pop-up SmartWordTM definitions, readers read faster with deeper comprehension; there is no need to stop reading to look up a word in a dictionary. With our dictionary database and software, just click the word and get the definition on the spot, without moving to a dictionary. The reading experience is vastly improved.

Expanded Markets. Most books are inaccessible to language learners. Even if a language learner has mastered the basic grammar of a language, the vocabulary is so daunting that they avoid reading original literature or read it but poorly understand it. But what if they could click any word and see its translation in their native language? The Lexiteria is also a world class translation and localization company. We can provide translations of the words in a text, too, opening your books to English-learning community around the world. The life-size example below shows how you could present definitions and translations for your readers.

It Pays for Itself. As you can see from the life-size example above, there is also plenty of space on the dictionary entries in our system for branding and advertisements. You can brand your own company and carry ads for others that will bring in revenue to offset the cost of dictionary itself. Our license allows you complete freedom in how you present our entries in your books.

Want Even More? Electronic publication also makes it possible to integrate the pronunciation of words in the book itself. You may also add links to your website or PDA server. Graphics often clarify the sense of a word or a related product that is linked to a website or PDA server. Maps showing the location of cities defined in the database are possible. The possibilities are endless. (Well, there are a lot of them.)

What Kind of Dictionary do you Need?

The Lexiteria Middle-School Dictionary. Someone who is reading a book does not need the same dictionary that a person writing a book needs. Readers need a fast, simple definition slanted to the content of the book. If the book is a medical book, they don't need the economic definition of depression. They need a dictionary focussed on the content of the book they are reading. If your market is Spanish-speaking English learners, the book may need only a simple Spanish definition and an audible pronunciation. The bottom line is: different books do not need the same dictionary.

If you only need a simple, effective, easy-to-read dictionary, you might need Lexiteria's Middle School Dictionary, a database of words, word forms, and definitions aimed at the youth market, young people at the 6th and 7th grade level. The database is designed specifically for e-texts, with no reference to other entries, and is aimed at the same educational level as newspapers, TV and radio shows in the US. Click here for more information about it.

Customization of the Middle-School Dictionary. At a very reasonable price The Lexiteria can customize the definitions and examples for your particular application: a medical text, religious text, business English course, whatever. You may have just the specialized terms or the specialized terms plus a general dictionary. We can customize the examples in each entry, too. You may edit the database yourself, if you wish, in any way you please. If you need a translation dictionary, just name the language; we either have it or can get it for you quickly and inexpensively.

Exactly What is a Custom Dictionary?

Selected Definitions. To answer this question, let's take a look at a typical definition of the English noun depression:

Depression (Noun)

  1. The act of pushing in, as the _depression_ of a button.
  2. A cavity or hollow, an indentation, as roughness consists in little protuberances and _depressions_.
  3. {Medicine} A mood disorder characterized by feelings of sadness, despair and discouragement. The principal types are major depression, dysthymia, and bipolar (manic-depressive) disease.
  4. {Economics} A period of deep economic recession, involving job loss, lowered production, many bankruptcies, such as the _depression_ of the 1930s.
  5. {Religion} Humiliation; abasement, as of pride, as the deep _depression_ that came with her life of sin.
  6. {Geology} The state of being depressed; a sink, a concave area, an indentation, as a _depression_ on a plateau.

The reason for a custom glossary or dictionary is to deliver precisely the information the reader needs in a way that is immediately understandable. In this definition of depression, the first two definitions are basic and must appear in any dictionary. But, if this definition is for an economics textbook, there is little likelihood that the medical, religious, or geological definitions are necessary. So, they may be eliminated.

Definitional Slant. Generally, lexicographers try to be objective in writing dictionaries. However, if the dictionary is a custom specialized dictionary, that is not always in the best interest of the publisher or reader. In a custom compiled dictionary, you control the content of the definitions. The following definition of campaign can be 'slanted' for a book on the environment(1), a religious text (2), a business English course (3), or military text (4) by editing the wording or in choosing the example:

Campaign (Noun)
1. A series of carefully planned actions aimed at achieving a clearly defined end, as a campaign for cleaner water. (1)
as a campaign to raise the moral character of young people. (2)
as a marketing campaign focused on TV and radio. (3)
as a military campaign to regain lost territory. (4)

Of course, there are other ways to customize the dictionary for your book or series. The selection of words themselves is part of the customization. But this should give you an idea of what we are talking about.
