Choosing a Pet

How do you choose the right pet for you and your family?

Many people will buy a puppy or a kitten, but not think about every aspect that should be tackled before taking on the responsibility of an animal. 1,000 of animals end up in shelters across the United States because of this every year.

Owensboro Humane Society will help you choose the right pet for you and your life style.

Factors to take into consideration:

  • How many hours a day/week do you have to commit to this animal?
  • How much money can be spent each month on an animal (food, toys, treats, vet care)?
  • How much space do you have available for an animal?
  • Does anyone in your family have allergies?
  • Are you ready to commit to an animal for several years to come?
  • If you already have animals, will that adapt to another animal?

All of these questions that you need to ask yourself before you even consider adopting an animal.

Decide what pet is best for your family:

  • Is this animal going to be a child substitute? Or is this animal for a child?
  • What kind of family are you (active, laid back, busy, traveling)?

Do your research, look up different breeds and start to gather some information. There are so many different types of dogs, all of them are wonderful animals, but they need to go to a home, with a lifestyle that can keep up with them and incorporate into their family.

If you have any questions about our animals please come down to the Society today and we would be more then willing to answer any question and help you find an animal that would be great for you. We understand that not every dog/cat is for every person. We take the time to get to know our animals so that we can help find them a better home. We work with our animals and figure out what situations they would be best in – can’t they handle children? Will they work out with other dogs or cats? Do they need to be the only animal in the home? All of these questions are taken into consideration when we try to pair you with one of our animals. We want you to be with your choice, as well as the animal be happy with their new home.
