Art and Art History

Adelphi University’s Department of Art and Art History offers future artists and arts professionals a rigorous training in the visual arts. Courses are designed to offer the next generation of visual thinkers the practical skills and the theoretical framework to reimagine the field and their place within it.

Our program includes four primary areas of study: Art and Design Education, Art History, Graphic Design, and Studio Art.

Students are challenged to think critically, hone their aesthetic skills, and seek creative solutions as they explore a variety of media, including new and emerging digital forms. We aim to prepare future artists, educators, designers, and visual thinkers to become vital contributors to larger cultural communities.

The Art Department offers students many opportunities to explore art outside the University:

  • As part of our comprehensive visiting artist program, eight artists visit our campus annually to present their work, meet with students, and conduct critiques.
  • The Department organizes two travel programs, offering students the opportunity to study Renaissance Art in Florence, Italy and community arts in Kosovo.
  • Our classes make use of the University’s proximity to New York City. We offer art history classes that meet weekly in Manhattan at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and area galleries. We place students from across the programs in internships and fieldwork opportunities throughout the greater New York metropolitan area.
