Cryptic released its answers to July’s community questions today revealing the released date for Champions Online second comic series.  Comic Series #2 will be be released on Nov 1st, 2011 and will included 5-6 issues.

We are working on streamlining the process so we can get new series out to you sooner. Currently we have 1 group dedicated to the Comic Series and plan to get another group starting on another Comic Series to reduce the wait between each Comic Series. That second group is currently working on some top secret Confrontation “rumbles” and other soon to be announced events.

Cryptic also released new information about their new Confrontation “rumbles”,

We are currently developing and testing a new “Confrontation” or “Villain Alerts” system to be introduced to Champions Online:Free for All in a future update. The Champions Universe is filled with many nefarious villains. We really want to tap into that lore to provide you with more new and exciting opportunities to defeat these evil forces. The content in this system will have you rescuing civilians, stopping bank heists, and thwarting the plots of evil doers everywhere. The goal is to let you live through some truly classic, comic book like events.

The QA is pretty lengthy and touches on a lot of issues and upcoming events.  If you want to see the full FAQ, head over to the CO site.

S2Games, the creaters behind Heroes of Newerth, today announced that their DotA game will be removing its purchase cost, which was $30, and will now be completely free to play. Heroes of Newerth did not require a subscription and was supported by a combination of  an in-game item store and initial game purchase.  It seem S2Games figured out it could get a lot more people playing if they just removed the game cost, which in turn should get more people buying items from their game store.

Players who purchased the game will now become Legacy members and receive special bonuses such as having complete access to all heroes as well as any content update, not including expansions.  Free-to-play players will have to purchase heroes, if they want access, as well as new content.

You can read through the F2P FAQ over at the official HoN site.

ArenaNet is heading to Cologne,Germany for this years gamescom where they will have a brand new Guild Wars 2 demo to show off. Gamescom, which takes place this year on August 17-21st, is Europe’s largest gaming expo so ArenaNet is bringing the goods.

The new GW2 demo will features a ton of new content which is outlined below.

  • Seven professions – All seven professions that have been revealed so far: engineer, thief, guardian, necromancer, ranger, warrior, and elementalist.

  • Mid level demo –ArenaNet has prepared a higher level demo experience for players who want a challenge. Face powerful Orrian enemies on land, engage them in battle underwater and face off against a new boss.
  • Sylvari and asura – Did I mention that you’ll be playing sylvari and asura characters for this high level content? Yes, for the first time, players will be able to get their hands on these unique races.
  • Character appearance customization – Also for the first time, you’ll be able to play around with our character appearance customization feature and control the way your character looks.
  • PvP – Last but certainly not least, ArenaNet is premiering Guild Wars 2 Player vs Player (PvP)! Swing by the ESL booth and head to the Guild Wars 2 area to get your exclusive hands-on PvP experience. Also check out the periodic exhibition matches that pit our valiant team of ArenaNet developers against the European guild BOON Control on the ESL center stage!

So not only we’ll we be able to see all seven professions in action and what underwater combat is all about, but we’ll finally get to see how PvP in GW2 works. For me poor PvP is a deal breaker so we’ll be keeping an eye out on that and we’ll let you guys know.

Gamescom is shaping up to be one hell of an expo for MMO gamers, I can’t wait.

NCSoft to Announce New Game at Gamescom

NCSoft, the guys behind some of today’s biggest MMORPGs, just announced that they will be announcing a new game at this years Gamescom in August. To put it in there words “the Next Big MMO“.

Carbine Studios has been quietly, yet feverishly working away for over four years on a brand new MMO! We’ve been working on our game in stealth mode for a long while – waiting for the day when we could finally start showing our friends, fans and competitors what all the secrecy was about.

Four years, hmm, so what could it be?  Lineage III, Aion 2, City of Heroes 2?  I doubt it, none of those seem like good candidates at this time, so my money is on a new IP. What do you think?

Update: I decided to do a little trademark research on NCSoft and see what they’ve registered over the last few years.  Three trademarks stuck out at me and when I tried finding anything about them online, my searches came up empty. All three are registered as computer games.

  1. Influx (July,2009)
  2. Blighted Empire (April, 2007) - I saw a few rumors about this having something to do with Guild Wars, but no one really knew.
  3. Wildstar  (Feb, 2011) – Western or maybe space MMO ?

LotRO Talks Itemization in New Dev Diary

A new developers diary was posted up today on the Lord of the Rings Online forums discussing itemization in the upcoming Rise of Isengard expansion.

Gear stat and rating limits will be completely removed to allow for more diverse and unique items.

Early in the development of Shadows of Angmar, we decided to restrict certain stats to certain pieces of equipment. This decision made it difficult to create items that felt different from one another. In the end, our light, medium and heavy helmets had very similar stats. We want you to make more decisions and to feel empowered by those decisions, so we’ve gone ahead and opened up the floodgates on which stats and ratings could appear on gear.

Gear level increments have also been increased to allow for bigger changes in gear stats between levels.

We want upgrades to feel like upgrades and we want you to be excited when you get a piece of gear. To correct this, we’ve created larger steps between the items.

Yellow gear items are also getting a boost to their stats in an attempt to make the relevant to LotRO players past the early stages of gamplay. Turbine stated they have “added significantly to their power starting at level 66“, but they will not be more powerful then the next level of purple items.

Rise of Isengard will make it easier for solo players to acquire four out of their six piece class sets through solo quests.  And for the group player or raider, there will be better drops for classic instances, scaling raids and skirmish raids.

To end things, the devs discussed more about what the new Finesse stat is and why its isn’t a replacement for Radiance. It was quite confusing even for a ex-lotro veteran, so I’ll leave it up to you to figure it out.

ARGO Online Adds Ranking Ladder System

Today ARGO Online added a new ranking system that ranks players based on their total XP and a second list based on players win/lose ration in RST mode.  It also looks like they are working on a third ranking list for guilds as that page currently states it is under construction.

Kicking off the new ranking system, alaplaya is holding a month long event that will gives players the chance at winning some loot. Players will be placed into “winning” levels, based on their character’s level, with the goal of accumulating as much XP as possible within the month.  The higher your current level, the higher your “winning’s” level.  You can find the info on the ARGO contest page.

Once the contest ends, the characters with the most XP earned in each “winning” category will win a designated amount of AP , with the grand prize being $150 worth of AP.

The new sci-fi MMORPG, Bounty Hounds Online, from Wicked Interactive is getting ready to launch its closed beta testing phase in North America tomorrow.  Beta keys will be available exclusively through Alienware Arena starting tomorrow, but we don’t have any links to the page yet.  You can just check the official BHO site, I’m sure they’ll add the link in the next few hours.

Bounty Hounds Online is free-to-play and is based on the popular PSP title of the same name.

“We are thrilled to have Alienware Arena participate in the launch,” said Sam Ho, Director, Wicked Interactive. “Their gamers are among the Web’s most influential and discerning. We know that they will not only go crazy for Bounty Hound Online’s sci-fi theme, they will also appreciate the four years of development that went into creating what will stand alongside such classic Namco Bandai titles as Pac-Man, Tekken, Ace Combat, Armored Core and Katamari.

Players can choose from one of five classes, Trooper, Agent, Bioengineer, Artillery and Scientist and are partnered up with a robot pet which can transform into a combat mech if the situation calls for it. BHO has multiple factions in the form of Mercenary Companies which allows for PvP between the different mercenary groups.

Below we have a recently released gameplay video for Bounty Hounds for your enjoyment.
