About
My name is David LaFerney, and ever since I first took something apart to see what was inside, or made a sling shot out of a branch and strips of inner tube, at about 6-7, I’ve been a do-it-yourselfer. Eventually (around 1987) I became a construction contractor – not the kind that wears khakis and carries a clipboard all the time (although I later did that for a few years too) – the kind with a tool belt and ladder racks on my pickup truck.
I’ve never met a construction problem that I couldn’t solve – yet. I must admit though that my solution hasn’t always been what the customer wants to hear, but that’s another story. Over the years I’ve designed, installed, replaced and repaired just about ever part and system of an average home, although my favorite trade is probably electrical wiring. For the last few years my construction business has been focused on building energy efficient, affordable homes using cost effective conventional materials and techniques – energy efficiency is really one of my “things”.

Our washer will not agitate, but will spin and drain. I think it may be the agitator cluth. The is no handle for easy access to the agitator bolt under the fabric sofnter cap. It is a hoptpoint washer. How can we tell if the problem is the agitator clutch or the agitaor spline? I could find no other way to reach you except thru the about section so I hope this is ok

First of all you should know that I’m not really an appliance repair man. I’m a Jack of all Trades (Master of none) as the saying goes.

Nonetheless – in all likelihood (99% confidence) there is some way to access the clutch dogs. Be observant, resourceful, and don’t give up. If you have a friend that is mechanically inclined bribe them to take a look at it. It’s probably simple – once you know the secret.

If you have the paperwork that came with the machine there is often an exploded view parts diagram that is extremely helpful in disassembly.
