A Global Scholarly Society

“The goal in the next decade or so should be to prepare students to be discerning users of, and contributors to, all media. An excellent starting point on the Web is the site of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing.” – Edward Tenner, Chronicle of Higher Education

The Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing was founded to create a global network for book historians working in a broad range of scholarly disciplines. Research addresses the composition, mediation, reception, survival, and transformation of written communication in material forms from marks on stone to new media. Perspectives range from the individual reader to the transnational communication network. With more than a thousand members in over forty countries, SHARP works in concert with affiliated academic organizations around the world to support the study of book history in all its forms.

The proposed text for the revised constitution is now available for consultation by the members: bit.ly/sharprevision

The text has been reviewed by the Board of Directors and the Executive Council. A rationale for these revisions has been drafted by Ian Gadd, President of SHARP: bit.ly/sharprevisionrationale

Members wishing to comment on the proposed text should email Professor Leslie Howsam, Chair of the Nominations Committee, who has overseen the revision process at lhowsam@uwindsor.ca.

The consultation period will run until 13 May. The finalised text will be published online on 23 May and members will then be asked to vote on whether or not they accept the revised constitution. The voting period will run until 1 July and the result will be announced at the AGM in Paris on 21 July.

In order for the revised text to be approved, an “affirmative vote of two-thirds of those members voting by ballot” will be required. Ballots may be cast online or by post. Further information about balloting will be circulated by post, email, and on the website.
