The current list of OPEI standards in development (at right BOTTOM) will be approved using the ANSI canvass process, which requires participation by a diverse panel of stakeholders including a) producers, b) consumers, and c) individuals or organizations having general interest in the subject products.
To participate in the canvass process, including reviewing, commenting upon, and balloting of a new or revised standard, an interested individual/organization must only identify themselves to OPEI as being directly and materially affected by the new or revised standard. There is no requirement of membership in OPEI, ANSI or any other organization. Ground Supported Standards
ANSI/OPEI B71.10 – 2013 American National Standard for Small Off-Road Ground-Supported Outdoor Power Equipment – Gasoline Fuel Systems – Performance Specifications and Test Procedures - This standard describes performance based test procedures applicable to the gasoline fuel systems for ground-supported outdoor power equipment with spark ignition engines less than 1 liter displacement.
ANSI/OPEI B71.1– 2012 American National Standard for Consumer Turf Care Equipment – Pedestrian-Controlled Mowers and Ride-On Mowers – Safety Specifications - The safety specifications given in this standard are for: (a) reel and rotary walk-behind power lawn mowers, (b) reel and rotary ride-on power lawn mowers, (c) ride-on power lawn tractors with mower attachments, (d) ride-on power lawn and garden tractors with mower attachments, and (e) lever steer ride-on mowers intended to apply to consumer products for personal use.
ANSI/OPEI B71.3 – 2014 American National Standard for Snow Throwers – Safety Specifications - The specifications in this standard apply to (a) walk-behind power snow throwers, (b) ride-on power snow throwers, (c) lawn ride-on tractors with snow thrower attachments, (d) lawn and garden tractors with snow thrower attachments, and (e) lever-steer ride-on machines with snow thrower attachments. These specifications are not intended to apply to hand-held snow throwers nor to airport, highway, and agricultural types of snow removal machines and equipment.
ANSI/OPEI B71.4 – 2012 American National Standard for Commercial Turf Care Equipment – Safety Specifications - The safety specifications in this standard apply to powered pedestrian-controlled, towed, and ride-on machines intended for marketing as commercial turf care equipment and that are customarily used by hired operators and to all aftermarket parts, attachments and accessories provided by the original equipment manufacturer and others.
ANSI/OPEI B71.6 - 2000 American National Standard for Powered Shredder/Grinders and Shredder/Baggers, Safety Specifications - Applies to rotary and hammermill shredder/baggers, shredder/grinders and chippers, and walk behind chipper vacuums that are sold for use as consumer products.
ANSI/OPEI B71.8 – 2016 American National Standard for Outdoor Power Equipment – Walk-Behind Powered Rotary Tillers and Hand Supported Cultivators – Safety Specifications - The safety specifications in this standard apply to (a) walk-behind powered rotary tillers, and (b) hand supported cultivators. They are intended to provide safety requirements and to help ensure uniform operator environments. These specifications apply to products specifically intended as consumer products for personal use. These specifications are not intended to apply to commercial products customarily used by hired operators or to products designed primarily for agricultural purposes such as defined in ANSI/SAE J1116 or SAE J1150. They are not intended to cover tractor mounted or drawn tillers, electrically operated hand supported cultivators, and are not intended to completely cover electrical requirements.

ANSI/OPEI B175.1 - 2012 American National Standard for Internal Combustion Engine-Powered Handheld Chain Saws -Safety and Environmental Requirements - The requirements of this standard apply to internal combustion engine-powered hand-held chain saws and replacement saw chains for use primarily in cutting wood.
ANSI/OPEI B175.2 – 2012 American National Standard for Internal Combustion Engine-Powered Handheld and Backpack Blowers and Blower-Vacuums – Safety Requirements and Performance Testing Procedures - The requirements of this standard apply to new portable, backpack and handheld, gasoline engine powered blowers, including those that accept vacuum attachments for measuring sound levels.
ANSI/OPEI B175.3 – 2013 American National Standard for Internal Combustion Engine-Powered Handheld Grass Trimmers and Brushcutters – Safety and Evironmental Requirements - The requirements of this standard apply to portable, handheld gasoline powered grass trimmers intended for use with flexible non-metallic cutting line or other types of non-metallic cutting attachments, and portable, handheld gasoline powered brushcutters intended for use with metallic cutting blades or other cutting attachments.
ANSI/OPEI B175.4 – 2013 American National Standard for Portable, Handheld, Internal Combustion Engine-Powered Cut-Off Machines – Safety and Evironmental Requirements - This standard applies to portable, hand-held gasoline powered-machines, which use a rotating cut-off wheel that is center-mounted on and driven by a spindle shaft, that are designed for cutting construction materials such as asphalt, concrete, stone, and metal.

ANSI/OPEI B71.9 – 2012 American National Standard for Multipurpose Off-Highway Utility Vehicles - This standard establishes requirements for equipment, configuration, and performance of Multipurpose Off-Highway Utility Vehicles (MOHUVs). The provisions of the standard shall apply to newly manufactured vehicles and become effective for MOHUVs produced for the 2014 model year.
