LOVE’S SO TOUGH. [6-12-11]
Mets v Pirates, 6-12-11 I am sure I am not alone when I tell you that this game made me nervous, early on. I mean, Jose is out there in the on-deck circle before the lineup cards are even exchanged (the background music for this is the Law & Order theme in Pittsburgh) and our seats are just off the Pirates on-deck circle and you think, you know, let’s get ’em today. And then Correia sits them down, one two three, and then he does it again, and then he does it again. I am not sure why TBF and I didn’t start talking loudly about the no-hitter that he had going except that I know TBF finds it obnoxious and feels that it’s an offensive punishable by the home fans spilling beer on us, but it’s not like anyone around us would have noticed or cared (the woman next to TBF just wanted to know if we had racing pierogies, and the guy behind us kept yelling for a double play when there were already two outs).… [more]

BLOOD ON THE BRICKS. [6-11-11]
It was a beautiful day at a beautiful ballpark with the Mets just steps away from .500 and R.A. Dickey was pitching and it was Jose Reyes’ birthday. This was a winning combination, at least on paper. At least on paper. It was one of those games, you know, where the Mets almost do things right, but not quite. It was one of those games where they hit singles that should have been doubles and doubles that should bring the runner home and throw pitches that should be strikes or at least catch the guy by surprise but instead go further than the hurler intended it to.… [more]

DODGER STADIUM
The final destination for this summer's roadtrip was the most eagerly anticipated one: Dodger Stadium. In so many ways, it lived up to expectations - but in so many, very critical, other aspects, it was a tremendous letdown.

Chase Field
Chase Field isn't a bad ballpark, at all. It's conveniently located within the downtown entertainment zone, adjacent to the basketball arena; it's steps away from light rail; there are food and drink options in the area (as long as you plan to patronize them before the game, and not afterwards). It is clean and inviting, and very fan-friendly. I would, however, be stretching things if I tried to convince you it was a great ballpark.

OAKLAND COLISEUM
There's no denying it: the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum, home of the Oakland A's, is a relic - a grey hulking concrete behemoth in the middle of a parking lot. It's a a dump, but I found it a lovable dump, made bearable by the presence of actual baseball fans in the ballpark.

AT&T PARK
Hundreds of words have already been written about the beauty of AT&T Park. The location, the layout, the design, the individual ballpark features. Well, here are some more words, tempered with a touch of reality. Yes, it is gorgeous; the exterior echoing ballparks of the past, and the interior seating bowl offering a graceful curve bordered by McCovey Cove. Shots looking towards the outfield could not be mistaken for any other ballpark anywhere else in the world. “Majestic” would not be an overstatement. You will want to budget some extra time to take the full 360 walk around the outside of the ballpark, and to make a side trip out to the Willie McCovey statue at the end of McCovey Cove.… [more]

PETCO Park
It is with complete sincerity that I assert that PETCO Park is the most underrated ballpark in the country. On a trip to visit all the parks in California, this was not a place I was particularly excited about; the Padres were in town and it was a way to tick the park off the list. Now that I’ve been there, I can’t wait to go back. PETCO is the most laid-back downtown ballpark you will ever visit. You can walk there or take public transportation; it’s a stone’s throw from the ocean, but backed up by a rich entertainment district that’s an actual part of the city, and there are quite literally seats for every budget and every ballgame agenda. It will remind you of parts of other ballparks, but yet, it’s not like any other ballpark out there.

BASEBALL ROADTRIP 2010: THE WRAP-UP [PART 1]
I came home from the West Coast with sunburned knees, pistachio shells rattling around my camera bag, and kept pulling ticket stubs out of random pockets. It was 11 days, 9 games, 6 ballparks. BASEBALL ROADTRIP 2010: THE WRAP-UP [PART 2]
Monday was, on paper, an ‘off day’, and although we were supposed to run to a famous breakfast place, we instead slept until it was time to go back to AT&T Park for the tour. At this point we were officially exhausted. We love ballpark tours, and there’s another big plus for me: the tours are when I get all my beauty photos of the ballpark. When we go to the game, we’re so consumed with batting practice and finding our seats and checking out the food and the views and the bullpens and whatever else we’re supposed to see – I love that I don’t have to worry about getting ‘the’ stadium shot, I can just focus on the game because I’m coming back for the tour.… [more]
