Les Moonves, president and CEO of CBS, had cited that Dexter season 8 will be the last during a question-and-answer session at the 2013 dbAccess Media, Internet & Telecom Conference.

Fans of Dexter will be devastated by the comments of Les Moonves, who on Monday during the 2013 dbAccess Media, Internet & Telecom Conference when the moderator made a remark about Dexter “going off the air,” Moonves responded by saying, “We have Ray Donovan coming on, with Liev Schreiber, which comes on with Dexter‘s last season starting in June…” reports Broadcast & Cable.

For such a senior figure of CBS to make a comment such as this, his words echo a painstaking blow to the hopes that Dexter could return for a ninth season, and possibly even more. We must remember that although this comment is quite worrying for the future of Dexter, there still has been no official statement from CBS or Showtime regarding the status of Dexter. At this very moment, Dexter has only been commissioned for season 8.

The Dexter fanbase is somewhat divided over whether to end after season 8 or carry on over into season 9, but the majority will be heartbroken by these comments. One of the largest stumbling blocks for CBS and Showtime is that with all of the current cast regulars’ contracts ending after season 8, it will be a gamble for the network to renew and renegotiate contracts, who will inevitably want more money, and will add a huge dilemma for the writers in which direction Dexter could take.

It seems logical after season 7, that Dexter will end after the season 8 finale. Les Moonves’ comments surely have been deliberate and will further enhance the notion of the CBS and Showtime commissioners who are quietly at work behind closed doors.

Dexter will return for its ever-likely final season on Showtime on June 30.
