After about three years upstairs, the recently expanded IndyHall has grown into a second floor. Located on the ground level at 20 North 3rd Street, the folks at IndyHall officially opened the new floor to the public during the last First Friday.
For those of you unfamiliar with the organization, IndyHall is a coworking space for local freelancers and independent creatives, entrepreneurs and damn near anyone else who’d like to join. Currently consisting of about 130 active members (and dozens of additional members who continue to support the organization), the new expansion was open to members as a functional working space a week after First Friday.
To celebrate its expansion, the coworking community also curated a member/community donated gallery for First Friday. The artwork was largely curated by members Kara LaFleur and Sean Martorana, including art from Kirsten Harper (a future curator for upcoming shows), Britt Miller, Wil Concepcion, Katie Regenye and Mike Jackson. The downstairs is also home to Jackson’s work-in-progress mural.
“[Jackson’s mural] is a direct manifestation of someone putting their mark on the space.” says IndyHalls’ in-house staffer, Adam Teterus which, he explains, is something IndyHall is looking forward to seeing more of–and strongly encourages.
The downstairs aesthetic is ultimately a reflection of its members. Several larger paintings and collections of ink and charcoal line drawings, illustration screen prints, and several mixed media pieces hang from the warehouse-like walls.
All the the artwork now remains a regular staple of the space, encouraging yet another layer of collaboration between the art and entrepreneurial communities. According to Martorana, “Not all artists really know how to do that–or maybe they don’t have the resources–and this gives them an easy way to get exposure. We want to teach artists how to do that.”
Artists interested in having their work displayed at IndyHall can contact the organization staff anytime.
