FAQ

PARENTS’ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if my child has never played in a band before?

Rock School is designed for beginners as well as advanced students. Regardless of your child’s musical experience, he or she will benefit from our flexible program and a caring and knowledgable teaching staff.

What is the Staff-to-Student Ratio?

The staff-to-student ratio will never exceed that of 10-1. All bands will practice in one centralized location. Each band will have its own practice room. Rock School staff members will be present at all times moving from room to room providing advice and facilitating the progress of the bands. All attending musicians will receive focused attention from all staff members.

What are the safety precautions?

Rock School is held at BEST High School in Kirkland. BEST High School and Youngstown Cultural Arts Center were chosen for their safe and secure atmosphere. Because this is an after-school program there is little or no non-music-school presence on the campuses. Furthermore, Rock School is issued exclusive use of facilities (besides school related functions) during the hours of the program and the staff is attentive to both the curriculum and the classroom environment. Youngstown is bursting with after school activities led by a variety of non profit groups. A safety plan is discussed with all staff and attendants during orientation and clear emergency procedures are addressed.

Who do we contact in case of emergency?

In case of an emergency during a Rock School session, parents of attending musicians will be provided with an emergency contact number. Also, please be sure we have your up-to-date emergency contact numbers on file in case we need to contact you while your student is at Rock School.

Who will play in my child’s band?

Your child will be grouped with other young musicians based on age, ability, experience, interest, and style.

Is my child too old/young?

In our after school program there is always an fairly even mix of students in grades 6-12 attending. Furthermore, your child will typically work with students in their own age group, although some classes may have students of all ages depending on ability levels, experience, interest, and styles of those enrolled. Private lessons and other options are available for younger and older students.

Does Rock School accept singers/vocalists?

Yes! Voice is the most dynamic instrument as well as the hardest to play! We have classes in voice in addition to the other instruments.

What about Staff?

Rock School has set a high standard of excellence for staff members. In terms of qualifications, experience, innate teaching ability and the talent to inspire, our staff members are some of the best in the field. Our staff has been carefully chosen for their amazing musical talent as well as their ability to be positive role models for the teens at Rock School. All staff come to Rock School with excellent reports from teens and parents in the community.

What styles of music are accepted?

Rock School is designed for musicians of every musical genre including blues, rock, pop, and jazz. All Rock School staff have an eclectic background in many different styles of music. Please check out their webpages on the links page for a sample of their musical abilities and style.

What about drugs?

Rock School strictly enforces a drug-free atomosphere and lifestyle. Violators of any rules will be dismissed immediately.

Can my child play with a friend?

Yes! We encourage friends and bands to join together, just let us know and we will make sure that you are matched up with your friends.

What is the atmosphere like?

The atmosphere at Rock School is highly creative, but most importantly, supportive inspiring, informative, challenging, non-competitive, and fun!
