Assist MOE in Observing Colombian Election Abroad

For the first time, Colombians living abroad will be allowed to vote for president and vice president in any Colombian consulate across the world. Overseas polling will be conducted from Monday May 19th to Sunday May 25th and to ensure the quality of this vote, Colombian member Misión de Observación Electoral (MOE) proposes an unprecedented international observation effort that enlists the help of the Global Network to ensure electoral accountability in Colombia.

MOE invites GNDEM members to observe the electoral process in the Colombian consulates of their respective country and requests participating organizations to prioritize their efforts to observing on Sunday May 25th, which is likely to have the highest voter turnout. However, any participation throughout the week of voting will be greatly appreciated. MOE promotes electoral transparency and credibility, and, with the help of fellow GNDEM members, hopes to reinforce these values for polling stations abroad.

The Electoral Observation Mission is a nonpartisan, civic observation organization dedicated to the quality of Colombian elections. With 33 regional headquarters in 27 departments and Bogota, DC, MOE strives to ensure free and fair elections nationwide. MOE has observed elections at all levels since 2006, and is a founding member of the Acuerdo de Lima and GNDEM.

Organizations should complete the registration form for each observer and submit it to international@moe.org.co before May 5th. MOE will provide online training to observers (available in English, French, and Spanish) on May 10th via Google Hangout. Following completion of the online training, MOE will submit the necessary accreditation forms to the National Electoral Council (CNE).

This round of elections comes at a vital time as the Colombian government and FARC negotiate a peace deal in Cuba. Candidates have contrasting opinions about the peace process, and the results of the elections may affect its status. MOE reported 1001 irregularities during the legislative elections in March, spanning 50 different types of electoral fraud. MOE will work diligently to protect the integrity of these elections with so much at stake for Colombia.
