My Dad (Bob Ivett) ran printing presses his entire life. He even invented parts to help to run presses more efficiently. Over the years he worked at premium shops like Anderson Litho and big web shops like Trend and more recently at a huge facility called Creole in Las Vegas. I think the biggest press he ran was 16 color, two stories tall and included folding and “perfing” at the end. My Dad always managed to stay trim by running from one end of the press to the other and up and down the stairs… keeping the press running smooth!

Needless to say I am fascinated by the process and the changes that have occurred over the years. I had the opportunity to run a press when I was in college and working at a small shop in North Hollywood. First I was a stripper (do not take that out of context!), ran the stat camera, burned plates and helped to run the 2-color Heidelberg press. Now presses are primarily digital (right up my alley!) but there are still some letter press shops out there doing amazing work here in Los Angeles. And how about those giant web presses like my Dad used to run… its pretty incredible to think that a roll of paper goes in one end of the press and comes out the other as a printed, folded brochure.
