2016 FESTIVAL PROGRAM ANNOUNCED

The first glimpse of programming details for SEAMLESS VISIONS: New Textiles and Wearable Technologies, the 19th annual Subtle Technologies Festival, have been posted to the FESTIVAL 2016 page.

Boasting 5 events over 4 days, this year’s festival has something for everyone with activities spanning performance, installation, demonstrations, lectures and a full-day hands-on workshop. Tickets will go on sale in just a matter of weeks, so stay tuned!

A fund for Young Artists eXploring Interdisciplinary Strategies

Developed to support young and emerging artists working at the intersection of art, science and technology, this dedicated fund will allow us to commission at least one project annually that addresses critical issues through interdisciplinary strategies and innovative design. This season, y-AXIS funds will support the creation of a unique window installation at The Sewing Junction by rising designer Adrian Wu as part of Toronto Design Off Site 2016.

Reunion with Sister Organization

As some may already know, Subtle Technologies has its roots in another Toronto cultural institution: InterAccess. Still one of the only gallery spaces in Canada dedicated to the production and dissemination of electronic arts, InterAccess’ mandate is also to expand the cultural space of technology.

Born out of IA’s basement workshop space (literally), ST came together in the late 90’s as an informal meet-up group concerned with pushing the potential of interdisciplinarity and collaborative research. At first, the organizations worked together often, co-presenting events and workshops. However, over the years and through many management changes they slowly fell out of touch.

This year, ST and IA will reignite their familial ties and come together for a series of springtime events. Coinciding with our theme of New Textiles and Wearable Technologies, InterAccess will host a series of hands-on, textile-based workshops throughout the month of April as well as a co-curated exhibition in their main gallery space for the entire month of May.

Subtle Technologies Names New Artistic Director

As of July, ST has selected last year’s interim Festival Curator, Zach Pearl to move into the leadership role of Artistic Director.

Zach will be responsible for filling the very large shoes left by Founder and former Director of Programs, Jim Ruxton. Beyond steering the organization creatively and working to realize its major goals, Zach will also continue to curate and organize the annual festival.

Coming from both a practical and theoretical background in the arts, Zach is keenly interested in the roles of science and technology as cultural capital and frameworks for sociality. In his other work as a designer and a part-time instructor at OCAD University, Zach sees the intersection of these disciplines at the core of his practice.

While committed to maintaining the legacy of the organization’s programming, Zach also envisions ST functioning as an access point for diverse communities to engage with art and science, and a provider of education and advocacy for Canadian artists and researchers.
