Those of you that use MFT cameras for video may be interested to watch that DJI Ronin Hands-On Field Test by TheCameraStoreTV. It’s really a nice toy although it costs close to 3000 Euro/Dollars on eBay (Click here) and BHphoto (Click here).

UPDATE: great Varavon BirdyCam 2 Gimbal video and deal at Personal View. It’s cheaper than the Ronin 🙂

If you were shooting 8-14 hours would you want to carry this semi-heavy load with your biceps. Also the added strain on you back is a BAD thing.

    • jefrs

Fortunately this rig has a briefcase handle, we see in the video that the operator dropped the rig down to that when just carrying it. Lifting anything with the hands above shoulder height increases back strain five-fold. Worse with an unbalanced load, again fortunately this rig is by design very balanced. Even on an extended long shooting session, the operator would not be shooting the entire time and his load lowered or even slung into a tree. Is there never provision for a portage carrying strap on these things?

Shooting for hours with this isn’t unusual. Especially with some kind of support for it such as this:

Based the start video in walking, OM-D 5-axis does better job in that. But because you can’t get it with other bodies, this is better. But because remote operator can’t operate the view remotely, OM-D lose.

If that were true then the GH4 would not need a rig because its lenses are 5-axis. Only the M1 and P5 have 5-axis. I get better results with the PL7 by letting it use Lens.IS (Oly’s default setting). I can be the human steadycam with the GH4 but only for short periods (it’s a tai chi thing). Neither image stabilisation system can compensate for gross camera movement, you will invariably get an unwanted lurch to be edited out: hence the steady cam rigs.

I dont know how a lens element can be 5-axis. Remember up and down are just one axis.

OK from my non video perspective
One thing first. Filming is really to complicated than it should be…

I see a couple of things I would like:
    1. Two shoulder pads for resting it on your shoulders while filming.
This seems very unpractical for anything longer than a few minutes at a time.
    2. Google Glass type of device that does live view and head tracking so that you can follow the subject with your eye.
That second person operation has no economic justification and increases the already bloated filming prices!

That thing they are comparing it to, GlideCam stick. What a gimmick… lol!

    • David Peterson

LOL…. sorry, you’ve no clue! But that is ok, most people who are not filmmakers do have no idea just how deep and complex this area is to create the polish products which people enjoy watching 🙂

For 3 thousand dollars I’ll hire a couple of homeless people to build one for me at half the price.
