A Walker in L.A.: The Road Less Traveled
The closing of a thoroughfare last weekend made all the difference

Last Sunday was CicLAvia, the glorious, car-free event that will take over a major L.A. roadway three times this year. Although most people take to the streets on a bike, I like to mix it up—I spent part of the time on two wheels, but was sure to get my steps in as well. Wilshire Boulevard was the main attraction, but the best part of CicLAvia is figuring out my own path to and from the route, and I always end up discovering worthy contenders for my favorite street in the city. This time, I learned about the beauty of 5th Street as it curves through Windsor Circle. Because it’s so close to busy Wilshire and 6th, I usually avoid it, but on Sunday, I discovered a quiet residential road with a quintessential L.A. view. That’s why CicLAvia is so great: The closing of one thoroughfare manages to open up even more possibilities.
