In all my years of trucking (25+) and writing about trucking (11), I have heard a lot of different versions of road rage. Sometimes the rager is the one trying to explain why the other guy was so stupid. And sometimes it the one who got attacked, explaining how the opponent lost his sanity. Sanity is the real issue when discussong road rage. To the police, it doesn't matter who drove like crap, who gave you a finger, or what he called your mother- the one who gets out of his vehicle first is the one going to jail.

After 25+ years of working as a company driver, I took the plunge and bought a truck. Over the next six or seven years, I would wind up signed on with as many different companies. I quickly learned that there is no money hauling for the major trucking companies, that pay you less than a dollar a mile, even with their fuel savings and fuel surcharges. You have to find a company that hauls high-dollar freight- I'm talking $2 a mile and up. On average, I made around $5 a mile. With Sammons, I made up to $10 a mile sometimes hauling heavy haul freight. It was by far my most prosperous years as a trucker and an owner operator. Of course, with heavy hauling, there is no running 3000 miles a week. By the time you get permits, and take the long way somewhere, your week is usually done with 1500 miles or so. But at that rate, it's enough money.

This really happened to me. I was pulling away from a dock and a forklift fell out of the back of my trailer! It wasn't entirely my fault. I put the dock-plate down, and closed the overhead door. But by the time I walked around the building and got in my truck, a forklift driver decided he would "help", and started to off-load some of my skids that were not even supposed to be delivered there, they were for my next stop.

These days, road rage is a fact of life. You just never know who is in the vehicle next to yours. It could be someone who just lost their life-savings, or someone who just killed his family and is on his way to kill his boss, or someone who is bleeding to death and trying to make it to a hospital, or a doctor on his way to an emergency, or a mom who is late for soccer practice. Any of these emergencies can trigger a road rage incident.
