Four ways you can benefit from UW-Extension Master Gardeners’ work
Bookworm Gardens
1. Join garden tours and presentations by “Plant Mythbuster” Tony Avent and other garden and landscape experts at the Wisconsin Master Gardener Association Conference Aug. 5-7, 2011, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Madison.
2. Enjoy many beautiful gardens around the state, such as the magical Bookworm Gardens supported by the Sheboygan County Master Gardeners, who help with garden maintenance, reading books and staffing at the nonprofit gardens on the UW-Sheboygan campus.
3. Pick up Shelley Ryan’s gardening tips through “The Wisconsin Gardener” Wisconsin Public Television program thanks, in part, to underwriting by the Wisconsin Master Gardener Association.
4. Ask Master Gardeners questions at events throughout the state.
The Master Gardener program is an all-volunteer organization. In Wisconsin, it is sponsored by UW-Extension, which trains Master Gardeners. In return, they volunteer in UW-Extension horticulture programs and projects in their communities.

Pyle Center rooftop gardens: aesthetic and edible
Pyle Center
With Lake Mendota as a backdrop, The Pyle Center’s rooftop and terrace include 11 lush garden containers full of colorful vegetables and herbs as part of a joint project with UW-Madison’s F.H. King Students for Sustainable Agriculture.
The harvested vegetables and herbs are given away to anyone every Friday from June to October, starting at 1 p.m., on East Campus Mall (next to the Lucky Building). They include tomatoes, peppers, basil, kale, onions, dill, cauliflower, broccoli, eggplant, and more.
The F.H. King student group partnered with the Pyle Center to demonstrate true urban agriculture production, bringing beauty and food to outdoor spaces. Larger scale urban agriculture can help reduce negative urban environmental impacts by acting as a natural filter, removing nitrogen pollution and acidity from rain water.

Wausau gets go-ahead on broadband grant
The Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to allow the Wausau Community Area Network to spend $1.9 million in federal Building Community Capacity with Broadband grant funds. Wausau is one of five demonstration communities that were awarded $32.3 million in federal broadband expansion and education grants through UW-Extension in 2010. A provision in the state budget required Wausau to get approval from the JFC before spending any money.
