What is the best kind of juicer to buy?

Written by Laurie Kavanagh on

Everybody loves a glass of fresh juice, and making juice at home saves you money and is quick and easy. Kids will also enjoy helping to prepare the juice. However, there are so many juicers out there now that itโ€™s easy to become overwhelmed by choice. Letโ€™s have a quick look at the different types of juicer available.

Essentially, there are two types of juicing machine. One is the centrifugal juicer, which shreds the fruits and vegetables with a spinning blade, then spins this slurry to extract the fresh juice. It catches the fibrous pulp in a filter and allows the liquid juice to flow out of the spout of the machine and into your container or glass. The other type of juicer is a cold press juicer, also known as an auger juicer or masticating juicer. These juicers gently squash the fruit and vegetables with a rotating auger which looks like a large screw. The pulp moves past the auger and is caught in one container; the liquid juice drips out beneath the auger and is caught in a different container.

Most health gurus promote the cold press juicer as superior, as the juice never hits a blade or heats up even a fraction – every last enzyme from the original fruit or vegetable is retained. Also, cold press juicers are known to extract more juice from greens, and cold pressed juice is said to keep for longer in the fridge. For raw foodists, those who want to juice in batches, or people who need to juice dryer vegetables such as spinach or kale, the cold press juicer is the clear choice.

However, most juice bars use centrifugal juicers, as they are faster, and easier to clean. Most parts of centrifugal juicers are dishwasher-safe, unlike cold press juicers. The juicers are cheaper in price. The juice will still be healthful, fresh, and just as tasty. If you are on a budget, and if you prefer to juice more common fresh produce such as oranges, apples, celery, carrot, and watermelon, a centrifugal juicer could be an ideal choice for you.
