The Canadian songwriter-singer, actress, fashion designer and philanthropist Avril Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984 in Belleville, Ontario and grew up in Napanee.
She performed with Shania Twain when she was fifteen years old and at the age of sixteen Arista, which is now RCA Records, signed her to a recording contract. Antonio “L.A.” Reid, a record executive, offered Lavigne a $2 million, two album deal. At the age of seventeen in 2002, Lavigne released “Let Go,” her debut album.
Lavigne with her debut album became the youngest female solo artist to reach No. 1 in the UK. The Recording Industry Association of America” certified the album four times platinum. Sixteen million worldwide copies of the set have been sold, which includes sales in the United States of six million. “Complicated,” her breakthrough single, peaked in the No. 1 spot in many countries in addition to “Let Go.” Lavigne released “Under My Skin,” her second album in 2004. The set peaked in the No. 1 spot on Billboard's U.S. 200 chart and eventually sold over 10 million worldwide copies. Lavigne released her third album, “The Best Damn Thing,” in 2007. The album was Lavigne's third No. 1 album on the UK Albums Chart. The set featured “Girlfriend,” her first No. 1 single on Billboard's U.S. Hot 100 chart. Lavigne has sold over 30 million worldwide albums The RIAA has certified more than 10.25 million albums copies making Lavigne one of the best selling artists in the U.S. currently. In March 2011 “Goodbye Lullaby,” Lavigne's fourth album, will be released.
In addition to her musical career, Lavigne has also branched out to pursue acting in feature films and designing perfumes and clothes. In 2006 she voiced one of the characters for “Over the Hedge,” an animated film. Also in 2006 she made her feature film on-screen debut with “Fast Food Nation.” Lavigne introduced Abbey Dawn, her clothing line, in 2008. Black Star, her first perfume, was released in 2009 and then in 2010 Forbidden Rose, her second perfume, was released. In August 2011 Lavigne will be releasing her third fragrance. Lavigne married Deryck Whibley, guitarist and lead singer for Sum 41, in July 2006. They divorced in October 2009. Since their divorce, Lavigne and Whibley have continued working together. Whibley produced Lavigne's upcoming forth album in addition to her single “Alice,” which appeared in the film from Tim Burton, Alice in Wonderland.
