Like every component of the photography world, the stock industry has seen it’s fair share of changes in the past decade or so. The decline of the magazine industry and shifting strategies of the advertising world, both fueled by the advent of the internet, as well as the birth of micro-stocks and the generally abysmal state of the economy in recent years have all played their part in putting the hurt on most of the traditional stock photography business models. Agencies and photographers alike have been forced to shift strategies or go out of business.
So where are we now? Come join us for an evening of insightful and informative discussion on the current state of the stock photography industry and where it is going from here. Our panel consists of a well-rounded group of editors and photographers from agencies large and small who are invited to discuss these very questions. On the table will be topics such as what today’s photo editors and buyers are looking for, whether it is still possible to make a significant portion of your living through stock sales, and what continually changing technologies (motion stock?) mean for the industry.

Our panelist include:

Ian Shive  – Tandem Stills + Motion
spacer Ian Shive has become a force of nature in the photography industry, literally. He is the Sierra Club’s 2011 Ansel Adams award recipient for his decade-long contribution to world of landscape and nature photography,  is the author  of a best-selling photography book and an active film and television producer with multiple projects at major television networks. Shive is also the founder of Tandem Stills + Motion. His images have appeared in publications around the world including National Geographic, Time, US News & World Report, Popular Science, Outside and hundreds of others. In addition to Shive’s entrepreneurial side, he has also helped shape diplomacy efforts around the world through his Wilderness Diplomacy initiative, currently underway in Afghanistan. Shive is most proud of his role in helping to encourage young people to spend more time outdoors and has reached new heights utilizing short films on the Web including his new nature travelogue series, Wild Life: A New Generation of Wild which has been viewed in over 120 countries.

Jon-Paul Harrison – Tandem Stills + Motion
spacer Jon-Paul “JP” Harrison began his career in sales as a representative of Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Mountain Resort. Working at the front lines of the outdoor industry, he quickly found himself licensing stock images for Aurora Photos in Portland, Maine, where he managed commercial and outdoor accounts. It wasn’t long before California called Harrison back, where his current role is spearheading sales operations for the newly-formed, photographer-centric, image and motion clip licensing agency, Tandem Stills + Motion. Priding himself on opening new doors and seeking out unique revenue channels for photographers, he has balanced a diverse roster of accounts including AOL, Sports Illustrated, Patagonia, CNN, Activision and many others. A small town midwesterner at heart who currently resides in Venice, California, Harrison loves the excitement of working with Fortune 500 companies, but finds the most joy when landing a photographer their first cover.

Ellen Herbert – Owner/Producer NEATProduction
spacer Ellen Herbert is the owner and a producer at NEATProduction, a visual production company based in Los Angeles. She is also the co-president of the west coast chapter of American Picture Professionals.
