UNU 2010 Annual Report

The UN University drew a step closer to becoming a fully-fledged global graduate school in 2010, with the agreement of rules and regulations for masters and doctoral programmes. We also laid the foundations for two new institutes that are set to open in 2012: first in Barcelona in the form of the Institute for the Alliance of Civilizations (UNU-IIAOC), and second in Dresden with the Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES). Open Education: New workshop on providers and services

Service Concepts and Provider Perspectives is the topic of our second workshop on Open Education, to be held in Tampere, Finland on 29 September. Immigration and social protection in the Netherlands

Delicate questions on immigration surfaced in Norway after the July 22nd attacker cited anti-Muslim views as motivating the assault. That tragedy has sparked debate on issues faced by many developed countries as immigration patterns shift with global change. A recent article by Melissa Siegel surveys the history of immigration in the Netherlands, exploring the links between immigration, policies and attitudes towards immigrants and how they shift over time. Social impacts of statistical indicator development

As the worlds economic future hangs in the balance, concepts like Gross Domestic Product, inflation rate and unemployment figures inevitably enter the debate. Yet what exactly are statistical indicators? How do they develop, change behaviours and intersect with broader social change? And, in the context of the UNUs work, how does this apply to science, technology and innovation indicators? UNU-MERIT Professorial Fellow Fred Gault explains.

Boosting innovation in the Western Balkans

Ren Wintjes joins an EU workshop on 23 September in Montenegro, to give a lecture on the major concepts, tools and policies involved in knowledge transfer. The seminar is part of a programme to support innovation in the Western Balkans by improving policy coordination, funded by the EUs seventh framework programme for research (FP7). Other speakers, from Slovenia and Turkey, focus on intellectual property agreements and the links between industry and society.
