WBAI Studio Evacuation
WBAI studios are right next to the East River, in the mandatory zone A evacuation area. We will be forced to vacate our studios on Saturday August 27th at 5PM. At that time, we are planning on airing 24 hours of prerecorded programming. Once that ends, or is disabled for any reason, we will carry programming from our sister station KPFK in Los Angeles.

PRAISE THE PREZ! If today weren't the 102nd birthday of Lester Young, I wouldn't feel so compelled to continue the Prez celebration. Last week's program, presumably available on-line at archives.wbai.org featured tunes recorded between May 1939 and May 1940 with the Count Basie Orchestra, and showcased the sheer organization of the Basie Band: many of the tunes exist in only one take, and each demonstrates just how much musical "information" can be packed into the 3 minute side of a 78 rpm recording. This morning, longer performances drawn from the jam-session style concerts of Jazz at the Philharmonic, and we'll hear the Prez playing alongside Bird and Bean. (That would be Mssrs Charles Parker and Coleman Hawkins, respectively.)

Saturday August 27, 10-11am City Watch

Patricia Rojas, who coordinates the Hunger Hotline for WhyHunger. WhyHunger works to end hunger both in the US and abroad supporting grassroots solutions that inspire self-reliance and community empowerment. The National Hunger Hotline 1-866-3-HUNGRY, refers individuals in need of emergency food assistance to soup kitchens, food banks, government programs & community organizations in their neighborhoods.

Sasha Lilley, giving a talk on understanding the economic crisis, as well as challenges and opportunities for the left. She is the editor of Capital and Its Discontents: Conversations with Radical Thinkers in a Time of Tumult. Lilley is host of the Pacifica Radio program Against the Grain. Marsha Gildin is a Master Teaching Artist for Elders Sharing the Arts, based in Fort Greene. ESTA affirms the creative potential of older adults and upholds their time-honored role as bearers of history and culture by using the power of the arts to transmit their stories and life experiences for the benefit of all generations.

The film is not what many assume. The original Zeitgeist was actually not a "film", but a performance piece, which consisted of a multi-media event using recorded music, live instruments and video. The event was "tossed" up on the Internet arbitrarily. The work was never designed as a film or even a documentary in a traditional sense - it was designed as a creative, provoking, emotionally driven expression, full of artistic extremity and heavily stylized gestures.
