EW Spoiler Room 8/26

Warning: Spoilers!

Castle spoilers please! Any good Caskett spoilers for Castle fans? — Danielle Gerard
Worried about the addition of The Killing‘s Kristen Lehman as an art insurance investigator/love interest for Castle? Don’t be. I hear she’s only in one episode as of now and has a pretty darn good story while she’s there. Obviously the casting choice was made for a reason (Chemistry? Yup!), but I’d calm myself a bit. She isn’t the female Josh (a.k.a. ‘ship wrecker!). But while Lehman is only in one episode, I can’t say the same for Beckett’s psychiatrist, played by Michael Dorn. He makes his second appearance in Lehman’s episode. (The first being the premiere.)

Hi there, I love your column! I would love some Castle scoop. Can you tell us anything about the return of the 3XK episode, “Kick the Ballistics” being filmed right now? I assume we can look for some great scenes for Detective Ryan, dealing with the fallout and it will be nice to see him in the spotlight for once. Thanks! — Cheryl
You’re going to see a side of Ryan you’ve never seen before. Also, a bit of casting news! I hear recurring White Collar player Ross McCall (who plays Keller) will take on a role in the ep as a cop who figures into the case. Also appearing? Lost‘s Francois Chau. So far, I’m giving a solid A to the casting choices this season!

Will the New Castle Captain Pull Rank on Beckett?

Warning: Do not read below if you wish to remain spoiler free!

By now we all know there’s a new lady destined to irk Kate Beckett next season, but Rick Castle’s potential love interest won’t be the only female she’ll have to contend with.

Newcomer Penny Johnson Jerald  said her character, Victoria “Iron” Gates, will engage in a little silent competition with the detective darling, too.

Clearly, Beckett is used to being “one of the guys,” so what happens when there’s another (successful, smart, domineering) female thrown into the mix?

Well, it’s not that either woman is particularly catty, per se, but they’re both chronic overachievers and will surely be out to prove they’re awesome (read: better than the other) at their respective jobs.

There won’t be any cat fights or hair-pulling (this isn’t a reality show, after all), but Jerald says there will definitely be an ongoing, “unspoken battle” between them.

So even though Beckett might be able to swap PMS horror stories with her new boss, there’s one thing that Gates will always have on Beckett: rank. Gates is her superior “and that makes a difference” in how Beckett has to treat her, no matter how much better or smarter Beckett might think she is, Jerald says.

Looks like somebody is gonna have to step off their high horse if these two ladies are ever going to see eye-to-eye!

Interview: Season 4 Scoop From Executive Producer Laurie Zaks

Over three seasons of ABC’s CASTLE – which returns for its fourth season on Monday, September 19 – we’ve seen Nathan Fillion’s wealthy, best-selling mystery novelist Rick Castle fall for Stana Katic’s Kate Beckett, the dedicated NYPD homicide detective Castle follows around.

Initially, Castle’s ride-alongs were for research, but by now everybody recognizes there’s a greater investment there than just getting the facts right. In Season Three, Beckett got a lead on the cold case murder of her own mother, which unveiled a conspiracy involving Beckett’s police captain, Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s Roy Montgomery.Montgomery died heroically, protecting Beckett, but at his funeral, Beckett was shot by an unseen assailant. The season finale ended with Castle holding a possibly dying Beckett in his arms and finally saying he loves her.

CASTLE fans are eager, to put it mildly, to see what comes next. Executive producer Laurie Zaks, who has been with CASTLE since its development phase, took some time to tell ASSIGNMENT X what she can without giving too much away.

ASSIGNMENT X: How do you feel about embarking on Season Four of CASTLE?

LAURIE ZAKS: It’s very exciting.

AX: Did you know that you had a Season Four before you guys decided on the cliffhanger that ended Season Three?

ZAKS: I don’t remember the exact timing. We did find out about Season Four very early. I heard rumblings of this very early on in the year. It was percolating and evolving. But I honestly don’t remember the exact timing. If we knew the show was going to end, it would have been a different [season] finale.

AX: As Castle has just seen Beckett get shot, is he going to be a little more wary of getting his heart broken because she may die in the line of duty, or is he pushing forward with the relationship?

ZAKS: Well, I think he’s going to be very aware of the fragility of relationships and I think that, like any person would be affected by [seeing] someone they love [suffer a potentially fatal injury] – and that’s what this year is, it’s the next step in Beckett and Castle’s relationship.

AX: Can you say where Season Four picks up time-wise in relation to the end of Season Three?

ZAKS: It picks up right after the [shooting]. The first scene is in the hospital. They’re bringing her in. So it’s as fast as it would take to get there.

AX: Were there any things that happened in third season that made you go, “Oh, maybe we should go a little more this way or a less that way going forward,” especially regarding the mystery surrounding the death of Beckett’s mother?

ZAKS: That whole mythology was spearheaded and written by Will Beall, who sadly is not with us this year, because he has so many films going on, but he had this in his mind all year, that it was going to start off in one place and end in another place. And I don’t believe that storyline is over with. I’m being a little vague with these questions because there are things that will be revealed in the premiere episode that will show, or given an indication of, how Beckett and Castle’s relationship will evolve to the next step.

AX: Was the decision to kill off Ruben Santiago-Hudson’s character, Captain Roy Montgomery, based on the fact that you needed the stakes and the consequences to be really high, or did Ruben Santiago-Hudson have another job?

ZAKS: No, no, no. We’re still so very sad about [the loss from the cast]. It was all part of the storytelling. Somebody had to go and the story was so intricate and it was such a surprise, this build-up into who the third cop was. It was not another job [for Santiago-Hudson]. We were all very sad. I’ve said before, I could never have been on LOST. It was very emotional. I could never take it if all the characters were getting killed off. We’re a very close-knit group.

AX: Had you worked on a show where a character had gotten killed off before?

ZAKS: I’ve been on a show with certain contract disputes [laughs], but honestly, most of my history is in comedy. This is the first show I’ve ever developed and been the executive producer on. I came from the network side. It’s different when you’re on the other side of those negotiations [laughs].

AX: Might Adrian Pasdar’s FBI agent character be back?

ZAKS: The character was great, we all loved him, and who knows, maybe this year.

AX: Penny Johnson Jerald, who played the First Lady on the first three seasons of 24, is a new series regular for CASTLE starting this season. Who does she play?

ZAKS: Gates. She’s the new [police] captain. And that sets up a very interesting dynamic, because all of a sudden, it’s a woman working for a woman, and all of a sudden, Castle has to answer to somebody who’s not so crazy about him, doesn’t want him around, doesn’t think he’s such hot stuff [laughs].

AX: Were you a fan of hers from 24?

ZAKS: Yes. And from LARRY SANDERS.

AX: Did her work on those shows make you feel like she was the right person for this?

ZAKS: We saw quite a few people. She had all the right elements, the right amount of gravitas, great acting credentials, a sense of humor.

AX: Was Gates always written to be a woman?

ZAKS: Yes.

AX: And always African-American?

ZAKS: No. We saw everybody. It was cast totally color-blind. It was going to be a woman, but we saw all ages, all ethnicities, some wonderful actresses, but it really had to be just the right actress, and she just came in and she was great. She was everybody’s choice.

AX: And in third season, we saw Castle’s mother Martha decide to start an acting school. Are we going to see Martha giving acting lessons this season?

ZAKS: I think so. In the [fourth season’s second] episode, she is dressed up like Desdemona because she’s going to be teaching Shakespeare. We will be alluding to it, certainly. In terms of how many shows we’ve done, we do have her getting ready to give some [acting lessons].

AX: Any upcoming guest stars you can announce right now?

ZAKS: We haven’t booked any yet. There are a few juicy parts. We’re doing a GHOSTBUSTERS episode and I personally would love to book one of the original Ghostbusters, but there’s nothing in the script yet. So there are some really good parts coming up that we have to put some really interesting actors in.

AX: Are you continuing the poker games, where we see Castle hanging out with real-life mystery writers playing themselves?

ZAKS: You know, we don’t have one set yet. I hope so. I love those guys. Those guys are so telegenic. I’m always so surprised when I meet them. They get in front of the camera and they’re great. Dennis Lehane – I was just watching THE WIRE and he was on THE WIRE. He’s such a brilliant writer, he’s amazing. And Michael Connelly is a total ham, he’s totally serious when you meet him. We love those guys. I just email them. We don’t even call the agent – I just email them and say, “Hey, want to play poker?” “Sure! Tell me when I have to be there.”

AX: And did you do Comic-Con this year?

ZAKS: I did.

AX: How do you like being a rock star?

ZAKS: I loved it. Well, Nathan’s the rock star. I was just kind of standing on the side, but it was great. I loved watching Nathan and my cast being rock stars, absolutely.

AX: And is the executive producer composition of CASTLE still the same, you and series creator Andrew Marlowe?

ZAKS: I’m a non-writing executive producer. Andrew Marlowe is the creative head, show runner/executive producer, and his number two is David Amman, who’s also executive producer, and Rob Bowman is the executive producer/director. So the four of us together cover everything. I’m the only girl [laughs]. So I’m the official cast mom/writer mom.

AX: Anything else you’d like to say about CASTLE right now?

ZAKS: We hope everybody tunes in for our season premiere. It’s fantastic. It was quite a big show to come back from and Andrew did a great job. Andrew wrote the first episode. I think a lot of questions will be answered and nobody will be disappointed.”

Castle Scoop: The Killing Star to Come Between Castle and Beckett?

Warning: Spoilers!

Think Castle only has eyes for Beckett? Think again.

Castle has just booked The Killing’s Kristin Lehman as the latest obstacle between the would-be lovers, TVGuide.com has learned.

Lehman plays Martina Kaye, a sexy art insurance investigator who joins Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) on a murder investigation that involves the theft of a valuable sculpture.

As we previously reported, when Martina meets Castle, the attraction is instant, which no doubt will make for an awkward working relationship with Beckett. But Caskett ‘shippers shouldn’t worry too much: We hear this particular vixen also hides a surprising secret from the team.

Lehman was most recently seen on AMC’s The Killing as Gwen, the campaign manager (and lover) of City Councilman Darren Richmond (Billy Campbell). Her other credits include roles on Felicity, Judging Amy, Human Target and Fox’s short-lived Drive, on which Fillion also starred.

Castle returns Monday, Sept. 19 at 10/9c on ABC.

Martucacomayuca: Castle scoop is never enough! Can you give us some?

OK, we all know that Beckett lives, but Tamala Jones reveals that there still will be moments of panic in the season premiere. “She flat lines and everything, and the opening scene is us rushing her into the operating room because we were losing her.” Also, there’s a new captain (Penny Johnson Jerald) in town, and she isn’t here to make friends. “This captain is extra hardcore, plays everything by the book, there are no short cuts, she doesn’t know Castle or care about Castle and the relationship between him and Beckett,” Jones says. “She is going to put a wedge in there.”

‘CASTLE’: TACKLING THE BIG ‘CHALLENGE’
As of today, it is exactly ONE MONTH to the DAY until the return of Castle. (Sept. 19, in case you have trouble with…months.) And with time dwindling down, I can see inside your hearts (and I can read your angry comments): You want to know what’s up with Castle and Beckett this year. Well, so do I! Luckily, Castle producer Laurie Zaks, knows and can tease appropriately.

“They’re still going to be your favorite couple,” she guarantees. “We are aware of the are-they/aren’t-they dynamic going on. I think the challenge for Andrew [Marlowe] and the writers this year is to take that relationship to the next level — whatever that next level is.” And truth be told, when I chatted with Zaks not long ago, she said some of the specifics are “still being ruminated on.” But, she says, they know a great journey is still before Castle and Beckett.

“We know that that’s there, and it can’t be that forever. That will be the biggest challenge this year,” she says, adding that the premiere episode will, in many, many ways, help set the course for where the show — and our beloved pair — is headed this year. “I think the fans will enjoy what they see.”

Castle Gets a Mr. Freeze in William Atherton

Warning: Do not read below, if you wish to remain spoiler free!

William Atherton has booked a chilly guest spot on the upcoming season of Castle, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

The veteran actor will play Dr. Ari Weiss, a “life-extension researcher” who has dedicated most of his work to the study of cryogenic freezing. When Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) happen upon a murder scene with no victim, their search for the missing body soon leads them to Dr. Weiss’ work — not to mention a bunch of other frozen corpses.

Atherton, 64, appeared in Die Hard and Die Hard 2 as well as Ghost Busters and Real Genius . His small-screen credits include roles on Life, Desperate Housewives, Law & Order: SVU and the final season of Lost.

Castle returns Monday, Sept. 19 at 10/9c on ABC. Atherton’s episode is slated to air Oct. 3.

TV Line Spoilers

Warning: Spoilers!

Question: Ausiello!!!! I haven’t heard anything about Castle in a while! What do you have for me?! —Kerri
Ausiello:
You don’t have to scream! I wasn’t hospitalized for excess wax buildup in my ears! In the aftermath of Beckett’s shooting, Alexis will fear for her father’s safety more than ever. And you’ll never guess who bears the brunt of her anger/anxiety? Go ahead, have a guess. [Beat] Forget it, you’re taking too long. It’s Beckett! “There’s definitely going to be some words and heat between Alexis, Castle and Kate Beckett,” says Molly Quinn, adding that Alexis “still respects” Beckett, “but at the same time [it's like], ‘This isn’t your life. This isn’t your dad. You don’t understand.’”

Question: Since Tamala Jones recently announced that she has become a series regular on Castle, what does that mean for Lanie and Esposito? —Danielle
Ausiello:
Ironically, it could mean their relationship is dunzo. While Jon Huertas (Esposito) confirms that we’ll see “a lot more of [the pair] interacting as a couple” this season, he adds that producers “want to go all the way to where we may break up. It may be because of Ryan and Jenny and their relationship and where they’re going as a couple into marriage. It might make Lanie or Esposito say, ‘Maybe I want to get married’ — and maybe the other person doesn’t.”

Question: Could I get some Castle scoop please? I finally listened to my hairdresser and watched all three seasons this summer and now I cannot get enough. Thanks a thousand Snapples. —Julie
Ausiello:
Castle’s getting a new lust interest! The show is casting the potentially recurring role of a “gorgeous, sexy, sophisticated art insurance investigator” who takes an immediate liking to Cas — and vice-versa. The twist? Ms. Insurance Lady is hiding a surprising past!

Quote Of The Moment

Beckett: Roy Montgomery taught me what it meant to be a cop. He taught me that we are bound by our choices. But we are more than our mistakes. Captain Montgomery once said to me for us there are no victory; there are only battles. And in the end the best you can hope for is to find a place to make your stand. And if you're very lucky, you find someone willing to stand with you.
