Chuck Scoop: Lost’s Jeff Fahey, Smallville’s Justin Hartley to Guest Star

August 11, 2011 | posted by Stephi | category: Chuck, Season 5, Spoilers  |  No Comments

Chuck has hit the TV fanboy jackpot: Lost‘s Jeff Fahey and Smallville‘s Justin Hartley have been tapped to guest star in this season’s second episode, TVLine has confirmed.

Fahey will play Karl Sneijder, the president and CEO of diamond giant Natal Jewelers. Although he’s been under CIA scrutiny in the past for alleged criminal activity, nothing has ever stuck. He comes to Chuck and Sarah’s spy shingle Carmichael Industries for help when his innocent little brother, Wesley, is kidnapped.

The lil’ bro role will be played by, you guessed it, Hartley.

Chuck‘s fifth and final season kicks off Friday, Oct. 21.

Got any scoop on the final season of Chuck? — Matt

NATALIE: The Buy More is going through a few more changes this season. Now that Chuck’s private spy agency, Carmichael Industries, owns Nerd Herd central, Captain Awesome will become the face of the company, says portrayer Ryan McPartlin. (Can I please have a copy of the first Buy More magazine with his pretty mug on it?) “He’s going to be like the Tony Robbins of the Buy More,” McPartlin says, adding that Awesome won’t be quitting his day job as a doctor. “The fact that Ellie and Awesome know about the spy world, it’ll be like the A-Team and we’ll help out, but only when we’re absolutely needed because of the baby.”

Chuck Exclusive: Craig Kilborn Spies Villainous Season Premiere Guest Spot

August 11, 2011 | posted by Stephi | category: Cast, Chuck, Season 5, Spoilers  |  No Comments

In a rare acting detour, talk show host Craig Kilborn has signed on to guest star on NBC’s Chuck, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively.

The former Late Late Show frontman will appear in the Oct. 21 season premiere as Roger Bale, a charming yet conniving investor who’s stolen money from some of the world’s most dangerous people.

The twist? Mr. Bale is rather dangerous himself!

It’s probably safe to say Kilborn will have a run-in with the episode’s other Big Bad, erstwhile Luke Skywalker Mark Hamill.

Kilborn, whose handful of acting roles include playing Ellen Pompeo’s philandering beau in Old School, recently inked a deal with ABC Studios to star in and produce a sitcom.

Chuck @ Comic-Con: Final Season Spies a Break-Up, Big Death, Star Wars Vet, and More

August 11, 2011 | posted by Stephi | category: Cast, Chuck, Interview, Season 5, Spoilers  |  No Comments

As far as TV shows that descend upon the San Diego Comic-Con go, the “mothership” — NBC’s Chuck — infiltrated Ballroom 20 on Saturday morning, kicking off a jam-packed convention line-up. What did Zachary Levi, Joshua Gomez, Adam Baldwin and the rest have to share about the upcoming final season?

For starters, we must say: May the Force be with you, Team Bartowski, given that Star Wars alum Mark Hamill will guest as a big baddie in the fifth and final season premiere, airing Friday, Oct. 21, at 8/7c. Since portraying Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy, Hamill has largely stuck to voice work, lending his pipes to myriad animated projects, including TV’s Spider-Man, Justice League, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Robot Chicken — to name but a smattering. (His full IMDb rez is here.)

Now, For Your Eyes Only, let us hit you with the panel’s other highlights:

“Back to Basics” | Now that Morgan is the acting intersect, Chuck will have to readjust to life as one of us normal folk. “He definitely at the beginning of our season wants those powers, but this season is back-to-basics for Chuck,” says executive producer Chris Fedak. “Chuck has to be far greater now. It’s very much about him coming up with those clever, smart solutions again, and having to be a real spy.”

New and Improved? | So, what is the plan for Chuck’s BFF, now that he’s the big bad Intersect? “In true Morgan Grimes fashion, it’s full steam ahead,” Joshua Gomez laughs. “Unlike Chuck, where he thought things through and cared about the welfare of other human beings, Morgan just wants to hurt people and take revenge. I couldn’t be more excited about it.” Just how boldly will the Buy More’s former assistant manager embrace his badass new skillz? Says Fedak, “Let’s put it this way: By the third episode, Morgan will have frosted his tips.”

Love Story | “Casey has either met his match, or his love match,” Baldwin teased of his toughie’s new romantic arc. Fedak adds, “Her name is Gertrude Verbanski. Chuck will now be running Carmichael Industries and their big competition is the Verbanski Corp., the best spy company in the world.”

The Break-Up | Avert your eyes now, Jeffster fans: “This is the season where it all falls apart between Jeff and Lester,” Fedak reveals. “It’s going to be a great war and…very dramatic.” Of course, before all is said and done, “We’ll definitely do another Jeffster number before the end of the year. They’ll go out with a bang.”

Casting Scoop | “We have a couple big bad guys that we don’t want to reveal just yet,” Hamill included, Fedak shared. As for General Beckman’s place in Team Bartowski’s new world, “Bonita [Friedericy] is still very much a part of the show,” Fedak maintained.

Job Security | While Fedak promises that “the Buy More is still very important” this season, Vik Sahay (aka Lester) has just one major concern: “I just hope this season that I get some scenes in the actual show.” Preach!

Gloom and Doom | “Someone might not survive this season,” Fedak warned of Chuck‘s final go-round. Such possible loss, he said, “will be big.”

Awesome Endeavor | Previewing Captain and Mrs. Awesome’s Season 5 adventures, Fedak said, “Now Ellie knows about Chuck’s spy life, so it’s much more of a family business.”

Mama Drama | Nothing is set in stone just yet, but Fedak says, “I’d love to have Linda Hamilton back on the show. It wouldn’t be the show without bringing Mama Bartowski back one more time.”

Super Spinoff | When asked if a Chuck offshoot is even the most remote possibility, Fedak’s response surprised us all. “Definitely,” he offered. “I love the idea that the end of a show is just a prologue for another adventure.” So, there’s hope for that Morgan/Casey/Odd Couple thing afterall.

Dream Weavers | Everyone’s got an opinion about how Chuck should wrap things up in its final season — even the cast. How should it all go down, Zach Levi? “Awesomely,” he offers. Said Ryan McPartlin, “I would like a feature trilogy,” while Sahay wants to see Lester “go out with a glorious death — preferably in slo-mo.” Scott Krinsky (aka Jeff) thinks there somehow “needs to be a baby Jeffster by the end of the show to carry on the legacy.” Some of the cast, though, are actually still holding out hope for more Chuck to present itself. “I’m still not convinced it will end this year,” Baldwin mused. And when asked how he’d like to see it end, Gomez simply replied, “I don’t.”

Curtain Call | An emotional Levi wrapped up Chuck‘s final Comic-Con appearance by thanking the fans with a tearful send-off, his voice cracking with emotion at times: “You guys are so epic, so awesome. All of the time and the money that you spend… you took energy out of your lives, and I just want to thanks.”

‘Chuck’ producer talks final season plans

August 11, 2011 | posted by Stephi | category: Chuck, Interview, Season 5, Spoilers  |  No Comments

It was the ultimate good news/bad news situation: Producers for NBC’s favorite underdog Chuck learned last May the show was renewed — for a final season. “We were picked up and cancelled in same phone call,” recalls writer-producer Chris Fedak. Still, it presents producers with a rare opportunity. Despite all the press surrounding the conclusion of Lost, broadcast TV producers very rarely get the luxury of planning an entire final season in advance. Readying for an appearance at Comic-Con today (the Chuck panel is always a high-energy highlight of the conference), Fedak talks about his plans for his hero’s last adventure.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was your reaction when you learned about the final season order?
CHRIS FEDAK: We were very excited to be able to do one more season of the show. It’s really amazing to be able to plan a great finish for your story and it doesn’t always happen in TV. We look at it as an amazing opportunity to close the Chuck story in one epic final chapter. We have a big story pitched and we have a final moment for the series that we’ll have been working up to for five seasons.

Some fans worried about too much of a focus on Morgan next season. How are your going to balance Morgan’s new super-powered story and still keep it a show about Chuck?
Fedak: It’s still very much the Chuck show. He’s the star and Zachary Levi is fantastic. Watching Chuck without the Intersect is just as fantastic as watching him with it. We thought that would be ane fun way to start to season — watching him get used to not having it, and starting the spy team and working outside the government while best friend now has a super computer in his head. We have a lot of exciting twists and turns planned.

Will Chuck ever get the Intersect back? People liked badass Chuck.
For me, the most badass version of Chuck has been when he uses his brain. I always feel like was the hero who figures out the unconventional solution — in the writers room, we call it “The Chuck solution.” He’s still surround by two season spies and Morgan — the half-assed spy.

The first episode is “Chuck vs. The Zoom.” What is the Zoom?
The Zoom is a secret I will not be giving it up to you. But it’s a rather dangerous and powerful secret.

Are we going to have another major villian arc this season?
Yes, we are going to have a villain story this year. But if you look at episode 24, we’re exploring Chuck starting up his own spy firm and exploring the bromance between Chuck and Morgan — he has to become Morgan’s handler. And the heart of the Chuck show the show is a romance, just because they’re married doesn’t mean they’re riding off into the sunset. There’s a lot of things that are going to happen this season.

So in terms of series endings, do like Sopranos-style enigmatic or are you going for more solid closure?
I love endings that are in some ways a beginning. This is the Chuck story and I would be a bad storyteller if I implied it was going to be a happy ending. There’s a lot of scary things ahead. As far as a TV fan, it’s really neat to look at all the other endings — Lost, Sopranos, Newhart — and figure out what’s going to be our own crazy snowglobe.

My personal favorite is The Shield.
Oh! Heart wrenching! I don’t think we’ll go that dark. But you never know… “
