  • Antique to Chic Upholstery

Atticmag | Kitchens, Bathrooms, Interior Design
Funky fabrics modernize antiques while allowing them to keep their vintage charm. A few years ago James Pickering was in New York visiting his friend, Timothy Warr, when the duo spotted a brightly upholstered chair in a shop window.  It was a poor quality reproduction piece and, despite its outrageous price tag, was attracting a [...]
  • Can you help this new 3D designer furnish his master bedroom?

Masters of the 3D tool mydeco’s pack of community members have varying degrees of know-how and expertise when it comes to our 3D room planner and they often share their tips in the forum. The 3D room planner is an innovative tool that lets anyone, be they interior designer, student or housewife, play around and create their dream room in 3D. I like to think of it as a virtual ‘try before you buy’ with home furnishings, decor, and even architecture. Many of our new community members pick the 3D tool up really quickly – they’re better than me in a jiffy! –…

There are many different ways to decorate a bedroom. It all depends on the effect you are trying to obtain. You can either go for something relaxing and calm, for something dramatic, for something exotic or for something cozy. Here are 4 different bedroom, each offering 4 décor ideas. 1.Exotic bedroom style The first bedroom, like all the others in fact, uses African influences. As you can see, there are four different options in which you can decorate it and all of them are equally beautiful. I love a view that is a true collage of textures, elements and objects: mountains, blue sky, rooftops, even power lines.  Yes, sometimes they can be visual noise, but when you embrace their movement and physical structure, they add an interesting dimension to a layered view. The Power Lines Collection. Desgined by Randy Twaddle Designs. Manufactured by CF Stinson. So for those who can appreciate the intrinsic beauty of the pole-mounted electrical transformer and its draping lines, then you will love The Power Lines Collection by Randy Twaddle designs for CF Stinson. • Finding Nemo: Novembre’s Chair for Driade

    Alicita Rodriguez
    14 Oct 2011 | 9:19 am
New in 2011, the Nemo Chair designed by Fabio Novembre for Italian furniture company Driade, takes its name from various sources: the little fish hero in the Pixar movie, the Jules Verne novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and an ancient Greek tale. Designer Novembre explains the classical source: “Going further in time, in a classical era around the 800 B.C, Nemo should have been the name chosen by Odisseo to deceive Polifemo the cyclops of the Homer epic poem. Ulisse, used to disguise, declares that his name is Nemo, no-one, in order to escape from certain death: the destruction…

When I was little growing up in Miami, the neighbors used to pay me and a friend to pick up pinecones from their yards. They were large, oval conifer cones, as big as bejeweled Faberge eggs. It wasn’t until much, much later—when I saw the very same cones for sale in a Kansas Christmas shop—that I realized that such trash is another man’s treasure. Of course, even as a child, I knew that the tree cones had a lovely shape and an enchanting geometry. The conifer cones remind me very much of Origin, a pendant light designed by Gregg Parsell. Not sure if the design was meant to remind us of a riddle, but the 1 x 1 LED Desk Lamp by Victor Vetterlein is as close to a play on ideas as a lighting fixture can get. I want to introduce it with a simple question: What is made from recycled wood, bendable aluminum and can be molded into different shapes? Maybe a limited edition Gumby doll, but certainly not something that would illuminate your work space. 1 x 1 LED Desk Lamp. Designed by Victor Vetterlein. Whew! It’s been a long week and Amy and I are looking forward to being back in Brooklyn on Sunday. We’ve had so much fun in Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas (and I’m sure Austin will be a blast this weekend) but it’s always nice to head home again. Since all a this traveling has been about a book, I thought I’d wrap up this week with a slideshow over at the HuffPo that rounded up some great book storage ideas from Design*Sponge at Home. Halligan’s DIY library table above has been a favorite of mine for almost a year now and the ski-shelves below from PJ’s…

When discussing recipes with Jill Donenfeld, founder of the weekly home-chef service The Culinistas, it was revealed that Jill had spent significant time in India working on a cookbook. We thought it would be a great idea for her to share a recipe for an Indian spice mix. Enter vadouvan, a popular Indian spice used in France but originally from Pondicherry. Jill has proposed making your own spice mix and using it to flavor yogurt to create the base for…

I’m so excited to head down to Austin today- not only because we’re excited for the book party, but because I’ve had a list of shops I’ve wanted to check out there for years. At the top of my list are Bows + Arrows and Schatzelein. When I’m traveling I rarely buy anything that can’t fit in my purse or backpack (my carry-on is full of craft demo materials) so both of these shops have the sort of small-scale accessories that I love. These geometric charms and bracelets are my favorites and I’m dying to check them out in person this weekend. The charms…

As a Canada novice, my first Vancouver experience will definitely bring me back to the Great North. Not only is the city impeccably clean and beautifully designed, but the people are some of the most generous and genuinely kind in North America. And while this metropolitan city is probably best known for its recent gig as host to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, Vancouver hosts many innovative events, including the One of a Kind Show, the PuSH International Performing Arts Festival and most recently, the Interior Design Show West (IDS West). I was lucky enough to be invited to the IDS West…

I’m really digging exposed raw materials lately, as evidenced by my love of this and this. I would be thrilled at the prospect of starting over with the lighting in my apartment, and if I could, I would definitely snag one of these gorgeous terracotta lamps for the kitchen. These are the first products available from the new UK-based Hand & Eye Studio founded by architect and designer Tom Housden just this year. The terracotta reflects a warm, friendly light, and I really love the basic shapes Tom has chosen — not overstated, just classic, modern and super stylish. The studio will…

I’m so smitten by the Paris apartment of Jean-Christophe Aumas that has been in numerous decorating magazines over the past few years – I spotted it in Maire Claire Maison first where these images are from below. This home is totally Palm Springs mid century meets Paris, right!? HOW FUN. The decorating idea that I’m taking away from these photos is the painted firewood shown above. Brilliant. I really, really love it. I’d like to try it in 80′s neon hues. Fab! You have a bit of pink, black, grey, red, teal and eye-catching acid green. If you don’t know…

I love their Acorn and Alouette lights but for a more sophisticated pendant, the Gris shown directly above is sexy and gorgeous. I would love the Alouette…

Artist David Mach has found an alternative use for all those coat hangers hanging in our closets, by turning them into enormous life-like sculptures like this giant gorilla seen above. Dubbed King Silver, the silver-back stood frozen in time beating his chest while towering over viewers at the entrance of last month’s V&A exhibition ‘Power of Making‘. A breathtaking welcome to the simple gallery space, King Silver prompted most visitors to stop and take a closer look at the bundles of coat hangers that formed the awesome (and rather frightening!) figure.
