Castellina in ChiantiCastellina in Chianti is a peaceful and wealthy hilly town situated in the Chianti Classico district in the province of Siena. It stands 578 metres above sea level and is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and oak woods.
Things to see: Via delle Volte, a covered pathway along the eastern city wall. Situated in the central square of town, the Donjon, with its two square wings and high walls, was restored at the beginning of the century and at present houses the town hall and the Archaeological Museum.
Several late-Renaissance buildings, such as those belonging to the Ugolini (in the past Squarcialupi), the Bianciardi and the Segni-Straccali families, enrich the urban tissue of the town, which has maintained all its historical-architectural characteristics.
Within easy reach of Castellina in Chianti lie many villages, parish churches and castles that dot the wonderful Tuscan hills.
Fonterutoli, Lilliano, Sant’Agnese, San Quirico and Ricavo are the most important villages in the neighbourhood of Castellina in Chianti.
The village of San Leonino, with its homonymous parish church dating back to the 13th century, the Romanesque church of Cispiano, the Etruscan grave of Montecalvario and the necropolis of Poggino are worth a visit.
The castle of Grignano and Recine are the most important castles in the area.
