Greve in ChiantiGreve in Chianti, in the province of Florence, lies in the heart of Tuscany, between two cities of art as important as Florence and Siena, in the Chianti Classico region. Surrounded by vineyards, olive trees, castles, parish churches and medieval villages, Greve is the "town of Chianti wine".
The small village, which owes its name to a nearby torrent, significantly developed during the 14th and 15th centuries and after the unification of Italy became the most important centre in the valley. At present, in Greve in Chianti there is a wine house at every corner of the town. Every year, in autumn, here takes place one of the most important fairs of the Chianti wine.
Although Greve in Chianti present urban structure dates back to the 19th century, the main square reflects the ancient 16th-century structure. At one of the corners of the square stands the Neoclassical Church of Santa Croce, built in the 19th century. The church houses a triptych with golden background by Bicci di Lorenzo and other works of art collected in the churches scattered in the neighbourhood.
Within easy reach of Greve in Chianti lie many villages, parish churches and castles that dot the wonderful Tuscan hills.
Montefioralle, San Polo in Chianti and Panzano are the most interesting villages near Greve in Chianti.
The Provostship of Santa Croce, the Church of San Miniato a Rubbiana, the Church of San Pietro a Cintoia, the Oratory of San Giusto a Montemartiri and the Abbey of San Cassiano a Montescalari are worth a visit.
Very interesting are also the castle of Mugnana, the castle of Sezzate, the castle of Vicchiomaggio and the castle of Uzzano.
