One Year Old Today

Exactly one year ago today, on Monday 21st June 2010, Wahoha was officially launched and opened to the public. At this stage there were only around 30 publishing partners in the network, but their great quality content and large audiences were more than enough to enable the system to function at a well performing level. In fact, within this first 24 hours there were over 500,000 widget impressions and 427 pieces of content indexed into the system, which is a fantastic achievement.

By comparison there are now [at this very second] 67,376 pieces of content indexed, and well over 1,000 active publishers in the network. During this last year our superb engineer Alex has created lots of new features and ultimately developed the system to a point where it is highly versatile, enabling us to offer an unparalleled service. In recent months we have also taken onboard three new employees, [known internally as Content Editors] who spend their days continually optimising and adding content to the system to ensure all publishers send and receive ever greater volumes of traffic.

We are extremely excited about the future and look forward to launching new products, meeting & greeting new publishers to the network, and generally just learning and developing as a team.

High CTR - The Holy Grail

As you may have noticed, when logged into your Wahoha webmaster account you will see that under the “Posts” tab there is a sub-heading entitled “Indexed Posts” that allows you to see all the posts that are currently indexed for every site you operate. You will also notice that every post on there has a CTR score. Having a high CTR post means it is more popular/viral, and this results in your properties receiving more visitors from the system. Essentially, having as many high CTR posts as possible will drive more traffic to your sites.

So the question is… what makes a post have high CTR? Well, as with all things of this nature, there is no simple answer. From a presentation point of view, I would recommend using some of the techniques we have previously advised on optimising your posts and creating the perfect post picture. But there is more to it than that. As with all content that attracts vast audiences whether it be on television, radio, broadsheets, or the internet, something shocking, awe inspiring, or heart warming will always capture the imagination and attention of consumers.

Over the last nine months since Wahoha was first launched in June 2010 we have either added or moderated nearly 50,000 posts. So by now we like to think we have a reasonably good understanding of what makes a post popular. Here are five quick common features between the most popular posts in Wahoha:

1) Originality - Posts with original content gain a significant advantage. Visitors will take much more interest if they have never seen an article before.

spacer

2) Specific Topic - Keeping the topic of the post specific as oppose to generic. For example.. “Top 10 Star Trek Gadgets” as oppose to “Top 10 Gadgets”.

spacer

3) Not Revealing - The post shouldn’t reveal everything about the underlying content. Visitors should have to click on the post to discover the content, the post is just a teaser to get them interested.

spacer

4) Organisation - It’s very good to look organised, if the post looks organised, so to will the perception of the destination in the mind of a perspective visitor. Putting specific subjects into collections or Top 10 lists will usually increase popularity.

spacer

5) Wow Factor Posts that have something extremely bizarre or unusual about them which either evoke a sense of morbid curiosity or zealous fascination always perform very well.

spacer

We continually trawl across the network for content that fits this description, and most of the time we find some pretty great stuff. But we would very much like to encourage you to submit other fascinating content that we might have missed along the way. It can have a big impact, adding a single post that turns out to be very popular will drive thousands of additional visitors to your sites. A very worthwhile result! TTFN.

Creating The Perfect Post Picture

Content optimisation is an incredibly important part of what we do here at Wahoha. We are constantly monitoring your post submissions to make sure they are optimised to an excellent standard that will provide a flood of extra traffic to your website[s].

Out of this process image quality optimisation is the single most important factor. Potential visitors to your site will make a decision on whether to click on your post or not largely as a result of how appealing it is. While we do our best to optimise as much as possible, we understand that a lot of bloggers like to upload their own post submissions with images they have selected themselves. So on that note, it is worth spending that little bit of extra time to make sure your post image is in tip top condition. Here are a couple ways to do that:

Cropping Technique

Once you have placed the URL of the image you want to use in the “Add Post” tool, it’s best to spend a few seconds cropping the image so that it will convey the best representation of itself. Most of the time this just involves getting as much of the picture in as possible. But other times it is worth focusing on something in particular as it could make the interesting part stand out even more. In the example below the image is far to rectangular to fit properly into the widget space. In this scenario the best approach is squeeze as much of the primary attraction of the picture into the cropped area as possible, in this case it is a Humpback Anglerfish.

spacer

 Clearly Defined Background

The image must absolutely stand out and be eye catching. Internet surfers will be scrolling over dozens of pages packed with content, so your post must attract their attention and curiosity. A good way of doing this is choosing pictures which have two clearly defined sections. The first section is the key interest point of the image, [in the below example this is Marty Mcfly] and the second section is the background. Below you can see Marty on the left standing in the Twin Pines Mall parking lot which is a fairly dark environment. Here the background colours are blending with the young time traveller, so overall the image becomes less noticeable. But the other image on the right is the complete opposite, it is bright and eye catching. The background colours are in contrast with him which makes the image as a whole stand out more. Subtle differences like this can make your posts substantially more popular!

spacer

Hope this was of some use to you. I will post some more optimisation tips in the near future. Just remember, the more of your posts that are indexed into Wahoha the better! TTFN.

Wahoha Top Tip - Getting More Traffic

Not getting enough people clicking on your widget? Want to increase this? Do not fear, we have a top tip here for you!

After many hours of experimentation and a bunch of conversations with fellow webmasters, we have discovered that one of the best positions on your website to display our traffic widget is directly below the main content of the relevant page, just above the comments. The reason for this is, once each visitor has finished reading or looking over the content you have provided, his/her eyes will immediately scroll down onto our widget where we have provided lots of interesting things to click on. By making this simple change, you can expect to increase clicks on your widget substantially. This is normally in the double figure percentage point range, which will result in thousands more visitors flooding back to your site from Wahoha. We suggest a 2 x 4 format, as shown below:

Obviously, by placing additional widgets on your page at the top, bottom, or down the sidebar will increase clicks even further. You may also want to consider using our popunder, another great product on offer that has exceptionally good click-through rates and will generate thousands more visitors for your website on its own.

I hope this post was of some use to you, if you are already displaying our widget in the above described manner… well done you! Till next time TTFN.

No.3: 10 Most Expensive Cities In The World

Date Added: 27th January 2011

Author: Weirdly Odd [ weirdlyodd.com ]

Ever thought about packing up and moving to one of the world’s great cities? Or if you already live in one, what would it be like to live in another one? Well before you decide, it might be worth taking this Top 10 list into consideration. The average price for everyday purchases such as coffee, lunch, and fuel in these cities is very high, plus, if you are moving to another country you have to take into consideration the FX rate, as this can make it even more expensive. But what the hell, you only live once right?

No.2: 10 Best Fictional Hangovers

Date Added: 27th January 2011

Author: DJ Mick [ djmick.co.uk ]

Unless you are a teetotaller, I think it’s safe to say most of us out there know what a bad hangover feels like the morning after a really awesome night out with your friends. This post on DJ Mick caught my attention as it features the most memorable hangovers suffered by movie characters in cinema history. It is always a good laugh to see Hollywood stars have a hangover that lasts all of five minutes, if only it was like that for the rest of us! John McClane has to be my favourite entry in this list.

No.1: 10 Most Controversial Billboard Ads In USA

Date Added: 25th January 2011

Author: This Blog Rules [ thisblogrules.com ]

Billboards certainly are not the most exciting forms of advertising in the world, but they sure have been around for a long time. Cities and freeways around the world are cluttered with them, trying their best to get your attention. In today’s hyper competitive advertising market, one way of doing that is to be controversial, to generate some buzz! Here is a great list where 10 organisations went that extra mile in controversial tactics to give you something to really talk about.

Fail Friday

This week’s Fail Friday is a problem that many iPhone owners have experienced over the last couple of years. The auto correct function… sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn’t, and to the very unfortunate it produces deeply embarrassing texts. In this example it is the latter.

Top 3 Posts Of The Week

Time for another top three posts of the week, here we go…..

NO.3: Everything I Knew About Velociraptors Was A Lie

Date Added: 19th January 2011

Author: Today I Found Out [ todayifoundout.com ]

Coming in at number three is the second appearance for todayifoundout.com in this very special list. This post reveals what a Velociraptor actually was. Due to the various dinosaur movies over the last couple of decades [notably the Jurassic Park franchise], most people if you ask them think a Velociraptor is a scaly, ultra intelligent, 10ft tall beast that hunts in packs. This is wrong. Read this article and you will learn the truth. Unfortunately, it will disappoint. Watching Jurassic Park will never be the same again.

NO.2: Photoshop Disasters

Date Added: 19th January 2011

Author: Stellas Magazine [ stellasmagazine.com ]

The use of photoshop to “improve” standard images is ubiquitous in the media these days, especially in fashion magazines. With its extensive use it is only a matter of time before mistakes are made. Most of the time they are to subtle and insignificant to notice, but every now and then you get a complete gem that is absolutely hilarious. Here is a great collection of ridiculous photoshop disasters. Very amusing!

NO.1: Top 10 Castles of the World

Date Added: 19th January 2011

Author: Fotomage [ fotomage.com ]

Being a history buff, I was instantly attracted to this article published by Fotomage. The great thing about this list for me is the appearance of Leeds Castle, which is a famous historical attraction very close to where I grew up in Kent, England. Like all top ten lists there are quite a few great examples of castles I feel have been missed out. But nevertheless this list is inspiring as it features breathtaking structures such as the Palace of Versailles & Mont Saint-Michel [pictured below].

Fail Friday

This week’s Fail Friday is a collection of “Parenting Fails”. Some of the photos are absolutely hilarious, but others concern me quite considerably. I can’t believe there are so many people in society that think this kind of behaviour is acceptable.
