YPSILANTI: Tobogganing slid into Ypsilanti in 1886

Long before Riverside Park had benches, a shelter, or pathways it was an unnamed overgrown area. But in December 1886, it gained one enormous man-made feature near the present-day Riverside Arts Center stairs.

The impressive entertainment structure was something any city could be proud of, but it wasn’t built with municipal money.

At the time, the city didn’t even have a piped water system. Residents had personal wells and cisterns. No sewer system was in place. Citizens used outdoor privies or had a sewer “vault,” or indoor septic tank, in their basements. Roads were unimproved. Springtime ruts and summer dust were standard nuisances to which horses contributed their fragrant share. With such pressing improvements yet to be funded and only 6,500 residents from which to wring tax money the city wasn’t about to spend on fripperies.Read Story
