Fish eyes freak Savannah out; what about you?

Savannah Guthrie gets grossed out by cooking a whole fish.

By Vidya Rao

Savannah Guthrie had a tough time concentrating on cooking while being stared down by a fish.

“I’m so sorry, fish,” Savannah said while trying to stuff a whole trout with a sweet potato mixture live on TODAY. “He’s looking right at me.  I’m sorry, but it had to be this way.”

She went on, guilt-laden about the trout, which, at the moment, had its eyes intact. “He’s looking at us.  I feel like he might have some hope and dreams and they’ve come to a terrible end here.”

At this point, the fish eye is still intact.

After the fish was stuffed, tied and placed on the grill, one of its eyes popped out. Natalie Morales jumped in to put the eyeball back in its place.

Tim Love, the chef who created and was demonstrating the dish, said that using the whole fish added a lot of flavor to the dish, and that his kids actually loved eating the eyes.

One of TODAY's food stylists, Lish Steiling, agrees. "It is a natural freshness indicator. The eyes should be clear and not sunken in," she explains. "I say leave the head on."
