"Rave On Buddy Holly"

tuneage:

I love Buddy Holly’s music. His music is simple, charming, innocent, light-hearted, and a litany of other adjectives that all add up to “great”. As a tribute, the Concord Music Group has put together a collection of covers that do what so many of these albums fail to do: pay proper homage to the artist without simply parroting the original records.

The line-up on the album is an impressive list of artists that includes The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Julian Casablancas, Paul McCartney, and more, but if you ask me, the album is worth listening to for Patti Smith’s cover of “Words of Love” alone. It’s just fantastic.

I have a pretty bad jones for Holly’s music, and I’m loving this. Definitely on the to-buy list.

Andy Baio recounts his legal trouble (and defends himself in the court of public opinion) over the cover art for Kind of Bloop (an excellent chiptune interpretation of the jazz classic, for those who don’t know). It’s an interesting, unfortunate story and a sad reminder that just because something likely falls under “fair use” (however poorly defined that term is) doesn’t mean you can afford to defend yourself.

While the album is still available for sale, it’s now without the (original, perfect) cover art. If you buy the album and want the proper cover art, please send me an email. Whatever “non-infringing” cover art Andy chooses, it won’t be as good as the original.

The American Man's Guide to the Pronunciation of Scotches

As someone who’s butchered his fair share of scotch pronunciations in front of people who know better, I wish I’d had a list like this a long time ago.

Spoiler Alert: the new album is phenomenal.

I don’t make a habit of sharing my desktops (because let’s be honest, who cares what I’m looking at), but this one makes me particularly happy.

Related: may I interest anyone in a drink?
