Why Path Pissed People Off
Sure Path isn’t the only culprit (soon afterwards it was revealed that photo sharing Hipster also does this) and probably hundreds of apps are getting away with this in the iOS store at this second, which begs for a solution from Apple itself — i.e. it should lock down the address book API and notify users itself when apps want to get their grubby fingers on it.

… Path never asked its users if it can do this. It may be using our contacts for the benefit of our user experience, for finding friends on Path, for example. But we need an explanation.

The newest SU update removes all direct links. Previously, once you were inside StumbleUpon, you could “X” out the page and go straight to the original site. Now if you’re logged in, you have to say in the brd version of the site. There is one way to get out, but it’s super clunky.
