A fantastic presentation!
faithful man. oh how we love you.
Though I like it, I don’t hear people preach/teach about there being female disciples with Jesus. You say there is historical evidence for this. Can you direct me to that historical evidence, other resources, beyond Luke? melhhanson@yahoo.com Thanks!
(Did you know Mary Elisabeth Fisher when she was at Asbury? I worked with/for her on Urbana conventions years ago.)
Hi Melody. Yes I know Mary Fisher. And for a starter you can check out my book Women in the Ministry of Jesus.
Thank you for posting this insightful and engaging presentation on the historical Jesus!
Are you familiar with the Messianic-Jewish ministry of First Fruits of Zion? They have a one-year study entitled “The Chronicles of the Messiah” which works through the Gospels from a Jewish perspective and was wondering if material of this nature would be helpful. ffoz.org/torahclub/
Thanks again.
Hi James: Most of the messianic Jewish presentations I have come across, and the one you mention is not one of them, are: 1) Dispensational in nature and 2) tend to read Jesus in light of later Talmudic traditions, turning him into a latter day rabbi, which he was not. I don’t find either of these approaches helpful to getting at the historical Jesus. If you want to see more helpful from a Jewish point of view read David Flusser.
I was taken captive by your explanation of the 1st century followers of Jesus understanding of our modern day jewelry of the cross. I often wonder why much of the historical teaching is never reinforced in our churches today. Such a great opportunity to give people a faith that never dies, given all that we know the story becomes the story of humanities need for salvation through the one man Christ Jesus. If the church would remember it is an organism instead of an organization, many would be disciples of Jesus, having the faith to say to the mountain throw yourself in the sea. The two never need collide, intellect and emotion that is a true disciple of our Lord.
Thank you, Bryant
Thanks. Ordered it. Your other
books on women on amazon are very expensive (rare?). MH
You should be able to get Women and the Genesis of Christianity second hand rather cheaply.
Thank you, Professor Witherington. I appreciate your work on the New Testament and have purchased many of your commentaries. I would like to see and hear more of you in audio format because much of my study time is also drive time. I searched for, found and downloaded a few of your lectures delivered at various conferences, but I wish there were more available. BTW, your perspective on the Beloved Disciple was really eye-opening for me. Now it’s the only way I can read the Fourth Gospel.
I’ve done a lot of radio and TV, but please don’t watch the TV stuff while driving
