Open source
CKAN is open source software that makes it easy to publish, share and find data. If you have data to share, CKAN helps you make it available. With CKAN, you can offer users an intuitive web front-end and API, with the controls you need to maintain data quality. Using open source software means there is no financial lock in. Any supplier with the right skills can host and develop it. There is an up and coming partnership program which is in place to support this. An overview of CKAN can be found here.
CKAN gives you a powerful database for cataloguing datasets, with an intuitive web front-end and API. Plus, you can flexibly extend CKAN with the features you need – from social integration with comments, to Google Analytics, to integrated data storage. Our own instance is “The Data Hub”. Feel free to look around.
Hosting and support
The software can be professionally hosted SaaS but also as an open source instance you can deploy yourself. There are documents here that will help you do the latter. The source code is found here (pypi in source format). Documentation about the source code is found here. About CKAN
CKAN was developed by the non-profit Open Knowledge Foundation in 2007 to run the Data Hub, a public registry of open datasets.
It is now used by clients including the UK government, Dutch government and the IATI Registry, and is managed by the full-time CKAN development team, with professional-level support and SLAs available.
