My name is Sunday-ma-Grace, I actually took up this name recently. It is a combination of my childhood name Sunday, (I was born on a Sunday afternoon) and Grace, my adult life name. You see, I am the last of 12 kids. My mum and my sisters decided for me what they want to call me when and how. Right now I am reclaiming my identity. I got to reclaim my identity and authenticity, I have three girls, I cannot pass to them what people defined for me, I got give them the real me or I risk being one of those mums you get to know them when they are old and dying.

This blog was born as a result of personal experience growing in the shadow of others. It took me a long time to realize, I am me, I can make some choices in my life. By the time I had my first and second child I was still plagued with a deep sense of low-self-esteem. I had it all. I thought I was ugly, too tall, long legs, not so good, poor, cursed, African. There was this sense of I will never have it all together.

I moved to the United States six years a go ( I am still Kenyan, and will be going back soon), and I thought my, oh my, poor me, all the women have it all together except me. I plunged deeper and deeper in that abyss of self-loath until one day it hit me hard, life is what I make it.

I realized that if I continue with that energy I am passing it down to my girls. Having taught Biology in a rural school for four years after college, I saw myself in the girls and how the cultural setting has made it so easy for girls to grow up with the sense of lower than. And I have seen that in the states too, it is just glossy and well decorated here but the theme is the same.

This blog is dedicated to my girls and all girls out there who need to know that they can spacer start early to amass some stamina and build up their confidence and self-esteem.

Back to my life. I am a Kenyan currently in North Carolina in the States. We moved here from NJ, my husband was a student at Princeton University. This is all I can say, PhD stands for Permanent head damage on the part of the spouse.

I do not allow myself labels like I am a teacher or a stay at home mum, or a work at home mum, a blogger, a writer, an author to be, of which I am all the above, those constrains me. I am a WYSIWYG-What You See Is What You Get. I can wear different hats depending on the weather. And I strive for enjoyment coupled with excellence and never for perfection. I give my best hoping that my best will bless someone out there.

Back to the blog.

There is a ton of negative information flying around that makes girls cocoon into a state of low self esteem, never to come out. If we get girls valuing themselves early, then we will continue to have more and more powerful women in every sphere of our society. From homes to boardrooms to state house, to international forums. Women are still needed in many areas where they are underrepresented.

I hope you find this blog helpful please leave comments, suggestions and ideas. I will keep updating this about me page with more info as time allows.

More about myself.

Schooling. I was in Butere girls an Anglican girls school in Western Kenya. And I was in Kenyatta University( KU) for my BEd Science.

Work. I taught Biology for four years in Jera Mixed Secondary School in Kenya. The first year the form four boys, so as to show me how tough they are, had their legs on top of the desk while I taught.

Volunteer work: While in Princeton NJ I volunteered with the organization RFBD( reading for the blind and Dyslexic) which is now currently called learning Alley. To all who are in Princeton NJ. This is great place to volunteer. I helped with recording Biology books, but I started out with the administrative work that are in plenty and need help. Check it out at learningAlley.org. They have hours running up until 7.30PM so you can get out of work and head there to help.

Hobbies and the things I love to do:  For the most part I love reading and writing. I write daily in my journal, it is part therapy and part building my art of writing.I read just about anything. When I was little and books were scare, any paper with words served me. I came to the US and I was thrown in a plethora of books and books in Princeton Public Library. It became a sacred place for me, I love that place with the whole of my heart. Thank you Princeton Public library.

I also love watching true stories, documentaries, crime and detective shows( they have to true, not fiction).

I love nature, all nature, the sunset, the chirping of birds, the beckoning sea, the open plains and the far away lands I wish one day I get to see.

I love to sing. I do write songs. Songs I hope to record one day.

I love reading for my children. It serves me well, since I like to study how the author has relayed the story, I compare and read again the books I love and the ones my children love.

Religion. I am a Christian, I believe God put me here for a purpose and a reason.I try not to strive or strain. Faith is the belief in the things that are not as if they are. When I let go then the answers come. I am led by the spirit.

NNT ( Non Negotiable Time). The things I feel I must do daily or frequently. I wake up and drink a glass of warm water, it is a habit that has now stuck with me for years. I have to walk every morning, it is sacred time, I get to breath fresh air, listen to the birds and I get some exercise. I have to pray and meditate ( includes bible reading). I have to wake up early before my children to sit quietly, sometimes I get to read, sometimes I sit and daydream, I also write in these hours, I create the foundation of my day, I greet the sun.I also do declare my affirmations in the morning.

I have to give thanks. Sundays in the evening is a time we have set as a family to give thanks, we all sit down to say what we are grateful for. Following is a list of 101 things I am thankful for..coming soon.

What I know for sure: If you give up now, next year, a time like now, you will be in a worse situation with a big bag of regrets. Keep on. The answers and solutions will come from unlikely places.
