10 Photos of Barcelona: Tapas, Art, and Turtles.

posted February 9th, 2012

This post was supposed to go up last night, but it didn’t. Why? Because last night my husband came returned from his most recent overseas jaunt, and the evening was destined to be spent eating chocolate-chip ginger banana bread on the couch while catching up on The Daily Show. Clearly, I am a woman with my priorities in order.

It seemed safe to reason that this post would go up early this morning, but that didn’t happen, either, because Rand was home, and I kept wandering down from my office to watch him sleep (which is weird) or, once he finally woke up, to type at his laptop (which is arguably weirder).

Seriously, it’s  a miracle this post is going up at all. And it’s only because he went to work. And, if I’m being honest, it’s kind of phoned-in, because I’m still sort of thinking about him. (Did I mention he was only gone three days? Yeah. I’m warped, kids. WARPED.)

WTF Weds: OMG. OMG. OMG. BUNNIES.

posted February 8th, 2012

I like to think of myself as a reasonably intelligent person.

Oh, stop laughing. I said reasonably. Yes, I’ve hopped on trains with absolutely no idea where I was going, and it once took me three days to get to the Presidio from downtown San Francisco via public transportation (I could have made it there faster had I been walking … backwards. While blindfolded.) But for the most part, I’d like to think of myself as fairly well-read (my favorite book is Catch-22. I swear.), cultured (I speak two-and-a-half languages!), and able to carry on an intelligent conversation (so long as no one asks me how parliamentary procedure, microwaves, or gravity work).

For you doubters, here is photographic evidence of my alleged non-idiocy.

Tuesday Reverie: Landmark Photographs

posted February 7th, 2012

I am starting a new feature on the blog. I hope it will serve me manifold: that it will impart a little more structure into my oh-so-random-blog, and that it will give me an opportunity to share some of the strange and fleeting notions that enter my head.

The premise is simple: I take a random photo from one of my trips, and I add some text that reveals whatever nonsense is going on in my brain. Simple. Easy. Random. Like LOLcats, minus the cats. I did a test-run last week, and I liked the result.

Missing the Show: The Magical Fountain of Montjuic

posted February 6th, 2012

I tend to miss things.

Street signs. Major themes in books and film (I watched Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and was woefully confused because I kept getting distracted by Benedict Cumberbatch’s hair). And often, when I travel, I tend to miss precisely what it was I set out to see on that day.

This past summer, when I visited Florida, my friend Giselle took me to the beach so I could see a rocket launch from Cape Canaveral. Not as grand as a shuttle launch, mind you, but still something pretty cool to see, especially if you didn’t grow up with it.

The Week: Feb. 3, 2012

posted February 3rd, 2012

This week has had my head spinning a bit. The new blog design is almost ready to launch, and I suspect that the second it goes up, I will start sleeping again (that’s how these things work, right? RIGHT?)

While I make a concerted effort to RELAX this weekend, and attempt to distract myself with the SuperBowl (though, really, it hurts my heart in ways I can’t really articulate that the Packers are not in it. At least the Aaron Rodgers photobomb is alive and well), you enjoy these links …

—————

What’s that? You didn’t get enough of my crazed ramblings on the blog this week? Then check out my interview on Ms. Morphosis (Warning: gratuitous photos of me and Rand kissing can be found therein. But that’s par for the course).

A concept that’s so self-referential, it made my head spin: minimalist movie posters about popular internet memes. (via @hopandjaunt)

Food Porn Friday: Hummus Kitchen, New York

I probably shouldn’t have dragged them all that way.

If I had a conscience, I’d feel guilty, but I got rid of mine sometime around the 10th grade, when I let a boy touch my boobs for the first time.

Thank goodness for that. The conscience-ridding, I mean. The boob-touching was less to rave about (teenage boys lack the tenderness that mammaries require).

WTF Weds: 12 of the Most Baffling Airplane Passengers I’ve Encountered

posted February 1st, 2012

As I’ve noted before on the blog, the list of things that are beyond my understanding is vast and ever-growing.

Take Go-gurt, for example. Did we really need a faster way to consume yogurt? Were a bunch of people really sitting around thinking, “Well, we love yogurt, but it just takes so long to eat … is there a way we could leverage Otter Pop technology so we can get those calories faster?”

Or those commercials where the chickens want to be mistaken for ones from Foster Farms. Why, oh, dear lord, why do those poor chickens want to be eaten so badly? Is it some sort of sick death wish?

An update and a freak out.

posted February 1st, 2012

I’ve been mentioning for a while that the new site design is set to go live very soon. Unfortunately, it’s proving to be a little bit more buggy that previously anticipated.

It should be cleared up in the next day or so. Until then, bear with me. I still plan to post daily (and yes, I realize I owe you a WTF Wednesday. It will be up later this afternoon and I promise it will be worth the wait), and the site shouldn’t have any downtime between now and the new design going up, but some of that is out of my hands. I can assure you that if it does go down, I am aware of it, and my awesome developers are doing their best to fix it.

In the meantime, you’ll notice a few things might look a bit strange (like, for some reason, comments are no longer embedding), or that the new design will be live one minute, and then the old design will be back up the next minute.

It’s odd. It’s a little crazy. It’s frustrating. But I promise, it’s merely temporary. (At least, the frustrating part is temporary. The things that are crazy and odd will continue to be so, because that’s the appeal of this site)

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go have more cake. Because that is how I deal with stress. Hell, it’s how I deal with everything.
