We Are 1976

It’s been over a year now since I first met Vynsie. It must’ve been the end of 2010 because I was still wrapping up my 52 Profiles project. I had gone in to the shop to introduce myself and leave some flyers for my upcoming show. But that was just the beginning. Since my first visit to the shop I knew it was something special. The people and all the great art keep me coming back. Just this past September I was invited to be a part of their “Fallout” gallery opening. Vynsie is truly awesome. Her love for art and the artists shines through in the shop. She has a huge heart for local art(ist). Vynsie’s brother Derek is one of the nicest guys you’ll meet. He’s just one of those guys that makes you feel welcome and want to come back again. Jully is the quiet one, but don’t let that fool you. She is equally as awesome. If you live in Dallas and haven’t been by the shop, do yourself a favor and go visit them. You can also follow them on twitter @weare1976.

Jeremy Cowart

I don’t really know Jeremy that well. In fact this photo was taken only the first time ever meeting him. But I can say this about Jeremy, he doesn’t feel like a celebrity. His heart is grounded. Listening to him talk about his adventures and the doors that have been opened to him was like sitting around the dinner table at a family reunion. Now you can only tell so much about a person the first time you meet them, but I feel like Jeremy is the real deal. We are all books with intricate story lines and typos. I only got to read the introduction of the book that is Jeremy Cowart. Maybe one day I’ll get to read a little more. Until then, you and I can both follow along with him on twitter @jeremycowart.

Nathan Michael

It must’ve been a Wednesday night, that’s usually when church has youth/college group, and that was the first time I remember meeting Nathan. That was 2001. Fast forward 10 years later and we’re hanging out eating pizza in Chicago. The past ten years had brought about many changes in our lives, but we still remained in contact through it all. That’s what I love about Nathan, he’s committed. To work. To life. To love. Watching him progress over the past decade has been a true joy to watch. If you have’t seen his work already, don’t delay, check it out. And while you’re at it, go ahead and follow him on twitter @nathanmichaelis.

Tim Coons

Where do you begin with someone like Tim Coons? For one he’s a musical genius. I remember the first time I heard the rough cuts of his “Chair and Microphone” album my jaw dropped. His voice is so uniquely refreshing. But it wasn’t until I met him face-to-face 8500 feet above sea level in Divide, Colorado the summer of 2010. I think that’s when the real magic happened. Getting to meet his wife, Betony, and daughter, Lucy, was a real joy. Tim’s affection for his family is inspiring. You can really tell they support each other living out the dreams of their hearts. So if you’re tired of the same old tunes on the radio then please do yourself a favor and check out Tim’s music. You can follow along with him on twitter @timbo30.

Sara Kerens

Light-hearted. Whimsical. Passionate. These are a few words that come to mind when I think about my friend Sara. We met through a mutual friend when she came to my house to photograph me for her “People I Know” series. Since then we’ve had the chance to hang out a couple times. She was part of our mini instameet a couple months ago. This photo was taken inside the Bishop Arts District after an afternoon of good food, conversation and dreaming up a future collaboration. If you haven’t seen Sara’s work yet, I highly recommend you check it out and follow her on twitter @sarakerens.

Andrew Shepherd

Fewer friends I’ve met who are insanely genuine as Andrew here. I remember the first time I met him I didn’t know it was him. We were all just hanging out at a friends house who was brewing a new batch of beer. Funny the things you choose to remember. It wasn’t until a few weeks later that we met up to ride our bikes in the aftermath of a Texas-sized thunderstorm. Our backs, and bikes, were soaked in the grit and grime off the street. But the ride home that evening was cool and calm as we got a chance to talk and know one another. The morning this photo was taken I met Andrew for some coffee and the best breakfast tacos in town. I am excited about getting to work with Andrew on some future projects. Follow him on twitter @andrewshepherd.

Alex Adair

Many people have come and gone in my life, but there are those few who have stood the test of time. Alex is one for the long haul. We first met back in 2001 through some friends I don’t see anymore. His light brown corduroy suit is still etched in my memories. I remember being in his wedding. I remember how much he loved Beck. Then I remember his divorce and the time where we didn’t talk much for a couple of years. But if there is one thing that’s remained between us, it’s our fondness of creativity. Now we’re both older, hopefully wiser, and I really treasure the time we get together. I would recommend you follow him on twitter, but he doesn’t use it.

Trainspotting

There is something beautiful about trains. The cold hard steel in motion. The history and adventure. The danger! Every time I pass a train yard my heart screams like a child in the back seat to pull over and go explore. I love how when you look at a train car you’re looking at years of history. I always wonder where this train has been, or who may have once slept inside. This photo was taken only moments from my house along a road where not many people stop to appreciate what’s right in front of them. I’m not sure why these trains are parked here, or for how long, but on this day I knew they needed some attention.

Matt Knisely

I don’t know many people who are as attentive to detail as Matt. His passion and dedication for visual storytelling is inspiring. But it’s not his resumé that impresses me, rather his humble attitude. His heart is one to serve and teach rather than make a big name for himself. That alone deserves respect. I have only known Matt for less than a year, but I feel our paths were meant to cross for a reason. If you aren’t familiar with the person and work of Mr. Knisely I recommend you follow along with him on twitter @mattknisely.

Lauren Marek

The saying “a picture is worth a 1,000 words” is never truer when you look at the work of Lauren Marek. Her ability to capture the everyday moments in a beautifully candid way is inspiring. I first found Laurens work in the vast sea of flickr a couple years ago. Not sure how though, but I’m glad I did. Earlier this year at my 52 Profiles art show she was gracious enough to come and shoot some photos of the evening. And just last month we had a small instameet here in Dallas where this photo was taken. I enjoy watching her grow in her craft as a photographer/visual storyteller. She will be graduating soon from college and I can’t wait to see what she does next. Make sure a follow along with her on twitter @laurenmarek.
