V-Day Strawberries + Cool Whip

spacer

spacer

This Valentine’s Day treat has become an expected tradition for the past couple of years. It’s a welcomed alternative to the typical cliché of chocolate covered strawberries. I love the fluffiness the Truwhip provides, as opposed to a hard chocolate shell. This brand of cool whip is gluten-free, natural, & taste practically identical to the regular kind. Even though there are many desserts solely devoted to this holiday, it’s fun to find a slightly healthier choice that sets the mood.

Skinnista of the Month: Simone Wasserman

spacer

Recently I interviewed actress Simone Wasserman. We talked skinny tips & fabulous tricks for staying long, lean, & healthy. Enjoy!

+ Quick skinny trick?

I am obsessed with herbal teas. No milk, sugar, or sweetener please! My favorites are American red bush, peppermint [ so refreshing ] & jasmine tea [ the blooming flower teas make great gifts ]. Tea is extremely beneficial for over all health & diet. For me, a warm cup of chamomile at bed time, or Kombucha [ another one of my favorite drinks ] tea at brunch, is so comforting & FILLING. When ever I have late night hunger cravings I always see how I feel after a cup of tea. It’s like an exciting version of water filled with antioxidants! Unless I am in SERIOUS need of an energy boost, I try to avoid caffeinated teas.

Another skinny trick is a body wrap, which is great to do pre & post holiday events. I try to do these once a month as it’s a great way to detox. It is highly important to replenish post wrap [ with water and whole foods ], as the treatment is draining of good & bad. Also, for the best physical results, you need to do the work. This means tons of water before & after. The wraps can help to flush out water weight, while shrinking the fat cells. You can easily lose inches, & the skin appears firmer over all. Obviously, what you put into your body determines how long the effects of the wrap will last.

+ Workout schedule?

My workout routines have always been on and off. I tend to put more energy into what I eat. I hate to run. I will not run. I do enjoy the elliptical, or stair master but only while watching TV! Fortunately, I enjoy Pilates two to three times a week. I use the reformer, cadillac, chair, tower, and mat. For my case, I have to be careful of using my neck muscles too much, which is a huge part of Pilates. I love how long & lean Pilates makes me feel & it’s such an incredible workout for the core. I grew up dancing, so I already felt more than capable in the posture and balance areas. But don’t get me wrong! Pilates kicks my ass and if I miss a session, I certainly cannot walk after the next one.

+ Favorite go-to healthy food:

Definitely steel cut oats. Recently I’ve been adding a little almond butter, cinnamon, blueberries, & always a little flaxseed. I also love homemade veggie soup with a dash of vinegar in my bowl. No cream! Just lots of broth & veggies. Sometimes I add quinoa to it, which makes it a little heartier. If I feel like a skinny tortilla soup, I’ll add avocado & wasabe rice chips. It is so easy to make a huge pot & freeze some for the week. For something a little more hands on, I’ll pick up a green juice [ kale, spinach, apple, ginger, parsley, cucumber, celery ], which gives me a natural high. When I am on the go, I’ll grab a handful of almonds or mix my own trail mix [ inspired by this Skinny Confidential post! ].

+ Motivation to stay in shape?

Besides my overall health & happiness, being an actress provides enough motivation on it’s own entirely. Not all roles require a perfectly toned, skinny bod. But after all, the product I am selling is myself & actresses are a dime a dozen. I have to be in tip-top shape for any activities a role may call for; fight scenes, running, hiking, falling, screaming, whatever. Experiencing all of this has helped motivate me to stay fit and healthy. Oh, & Victoria’s Secret Models!!!

+ Beauty product recommendation?

My latest love, EmerginC Revital-Eye’s mask, is the ultimate pick me up! Everything I use is by Sonya Dakar. I change up products within the line, depending on my skin’s needs. I highly recommend the Omega-3 oil, or “liquid gold.” I use this every night under my moisturizer, after cleansing and toning. It’s the cure for dry skin! It’s important to remember too much product can often have a negative result.

+ Natural beauty remedy?

I have my mom to thank for my knowledge of natural beauty/health remedies. For anyone with acne or even the occasional pimple, I recommend Heal Acne. It’s my favorite acne product. Lately, I have been mixing my own body scrub which leaves my skin feeling so soft and clean. I use brown sugar, a few drops of lavender oil, a bit of jojoba oil & a dash of organic orange juice.

The Skinny Confidential Workout Playlist

spacer

Let’s be honest, the worst thing ever is working out with incredibly dull or outdated music. I personally need motivating music to pump up the energy or I ending up feeling sluggish. Jordan [ my favorite workout partner ] & I created “The Skinny Confidential Playlist” for all you fab fitness enthusiasts.

We created the list through Spotify [ where anyone can share music ]. The workout playlist can be found here.

What’s some of your favorite workout music?

Sprinkled Gluten-Free Cupcakes

spacer

When I bake cupcakes, I make sure that there’s other people around to enjoy them. Super Bowl Sunday was the perfect occasion to test out these gluten-free mini cakes. I appreciate small detail, so these paper straws brightened up the dessert & the pastel sprinkles added a light crunch. There’s no reason for me to eat ten, so the leftover cupcakes will be handed out today at a meeting & work.

* Quick Skinny Tip: take all that leftover Super Bowl junk & bring it to friends, the workplace, or anywhere that’s out of the house. Get rid of temptation. Replace your countertops with bowls of fruit [ grapes, watermelon, apples, etc. ]. Get rid of Sunday’s calorie-filled crap!

[ Michael's mid-day cocktail choice: spicy jalapeño infused margarita ]

This past week was annoying. I was eating way more than normal, feeling fatigued after my usual workout routines, & could not figure out why I was constantly craving everything. Turns out, I was getting sick. The body goes into defensive mode when you’re about to obtain an awful bug, making you feel insatiably hungry. Starting Monday I am detoxing; this means laying off carbs/alcohol/sweets & opting for fresh juices, greens, eggs, & a boatload of fruit. I hope everyone enjoys their Super Bowl Sunday!
