Water Rising | A Mixtape by Canon Blue
September 26, 2011 - By Bobby Solomon - Category: The Fox Is Black Mixtape
I know, I know, it’s been too long since I had a new mixtape on the site. Thankfully I have some cool folks writing me to see if they can make mixtapes for the site, and well, I took one of them up on their offer. You may remember Philip writing about a certain fella’ named Canon Blue, also known as Daniel James, who’s an awesome musician in his own right. When he wrote to see if he could make a mixtape, I absolutely took him up on his offer.
He’s created an awesome mixtape that I’m jealous I didn’t make, mostly because I couldn’t. I know two of the 12 songs on this mix, and I love all of them. It feels very much like right now, kind of the end of something, the seasons shifting from one to another. A lot of it is folk-y, there’s a lot of strings and guitar plucking. It’s a really bright feeling mix, which is why I made the cover you see above. If you’ve been in need of a new mix, or new music in general, I think you’ll be pretty happy with how this turned out. June 27, 2011 - By Bobby Solomon - Category: The Fox Is Black Mixtape
I promised more mixtapes, so here we are, and here you go. This mix was made by my good buddy Justin Gage over at Aquarium Drunkard, one of the very best music blogs out there. He’s crafted up 8 summery songs that will give you a half an hour of aural enjoyment. I’ve been listening to Justin’s mix for the last couple of weeks and it’s amazingly fun. It’s got a great vibe and should brighten your day no matter what the weather outside may be.

Nearsayerfive by Eddie The Wheel

Peel The Label Tell A Fable | A Mixtape by Mark Walat
June 7, 2011 - By Bobby Solomon - Category: The Fox Is Black Mixtape
It’s been far too long since I’ve released a mixtape, and I apologize for that. As I think I said before, I don’t listen to music as much as I used to, so it’s rather difficult to put new stuff together frequently. But I think I’ve found the answer. I think I’m going to officially start asking people to make mixtapes for The Fox Is Black, that way we can all hear something and get diverse mix of music, sound good?
First up is a local Los Angeles guy named Mark Walat that I randomly met and ended up having a bunch of friends in common. He’s a regular DJ over on VIVA RADIO a damn good photographer and an all around nice guy. For his mix he’s put together a collection of songs that I would have never put together, and that’s why I’m totally into it. Honestly, I haven’t heard of half of these bands, but it’s a damn good mix, really upbeat and great to get some work done to. In Mark’s own words:
The mix is built around a late 70′s/80′s Funk-Disco-Post-Punk theme. Think the jams you would hear coming from boomboxes on the subway or if you were club hopping the Lower East Side. These are the left field tunes that some say shaped Hip Hop – the tunes from a time before Crack.
If you dig the mix leave Mark some love in the comments, and I need to give Mark a huge thanks for making this mix, even though I’m posting it 6 months later. You’re the best man! I have another mix waiting in the wings, so I’ll be sure to release that really soon as well.
Here’s the tracklist:
Twist by Tones On Tail
Damaged Goods by Gang Of Four
Too Many Creeps by Bush Tetras
Warning Sign by Talking Heads
My Spine Is The Bassline by Shriekback
Cavern by Liquid Liquid
This Is Radio Clash by The Clash
Your Life by Konk
Mongoloid by Devo
Typical Girls by Slits
She Is Beyond Good And Evil by The Pop Group
Now That You’ve Gone by Delta
Rip It Up by Orange Juice
My Spirit by A Certain Ratio
Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll by Ian Dury
P.S. I stole the back photo from a guy named Jeff who was travelling around India!

The In-Between Space | A Mix By The Fox Is Black

Nine times out of ten I don’t mean to make a mixtape. Most of the time I’ll start having one or two songs stick in my head, and from there I start drawing connections to other songs, so on and so forth. Such was this mix I’m calling The In-Between Space, which I found through the Japanese word Engawa. I thought it was fitting for this mix because the songs, although rather upbeat, ended up having a lot of references to the parting of lovers, being sad and finding happiness. Honestly, it wasn’t on purpose whatsoever, I’m quite satisfied in my personal life. But together they ended up making a really beautiful blend of songs that really feels like they embody spring.
There’s some brand new stuff from Fleet Foxes and Ezra Furman, some new Radiohead and some year old stuff from Mojave 3. I think it’s a fairly eclectic mix that should tide you over for a bit. But not to fret, I have a guest mix coming out next week or the week after to continue the good tunes.

Not In Love | A Mix by The Fox is Black

It’s been quite a while since I’ve done a mix of any kind, this for a couple of reasons. The first is that I don’t listen to as much music as I used to. Partially to blame is being in a relationship, where before I’d spend hours pouring over new music, now I spend it with someone I love being around. It’s also because I have a full time job and the blog, so it’s hard to spend as much time devoting myself to new music. The other reason is I needed to find my inspiration again after changing the name of the site. The Kitsune Noir Mixcasts will always be there but I needed to remold the mixtapes into something new, and that took me a little bit of time.
But here we are with a new mix in time for Valentine’s Day, though it really has nothing to do with the holiday. No, this mix is filled with all kinds of loud songs, be them electronic or rock or somewhere in between. I start things off nice and then punch you in the face. If you’re in need of waking up or want something to run to, this might be what you need.
If you want something more lovey-dovey be sure to check out Kitsune Noir Mixcast No.025, it’s made for just such an occasion. Here’s the tracklist for the mix:
Swarming by Efterklang
Seed by Kap Bambino
Fujiyama Attack by Guitar Wolf
Tell ‘Em by Sleigh Bells
This Is All We’ve Got by Cut Copy
Tokyo Eye by Sonic Youth
Mickey Mouse by Wavves
Exit Does Not Exist by Modest Mouse
We Are Sex Bob-omb by Sex Bob-omb
Not In Love by Crystal Castles
Bury Us Alive by Starfucker
