Fifties Friday – A 1950s American Diner Inspired Picnic Photo Shoot

July 29th, 2011

I’m incredibly excited about today’s post because it has been a long time coming since I first had the idea to do this shoot. It’s the result of a host of super designers & suppliers helping out, not to mention my lovely friends and the amazingly talented Tino & Pip Photography. spacer What I really wanted to capture in these photos was summer sun and good friends, while showcasing some the talents of some fabulous little businesses. The inspiration was classic 50s American diner meets summer picnic. I am so pleased with the results! Tino & Pip Photography have worked their magic on these photos. I love how they have captured the light – it’s like taking in a breath of fresh summer air looking at these photos. Please do visit the Tino & Pip Photography website for more examples of their work – they are truly talented and such a lovely couple (who recently got engaged – yay!).

The models were my very good friends who I have known since school – Fenella, Annabel & Fleur. A huge thanks to them for participating! Here we all are (that’s me top left), then Fleur (next to me), Annabel (bottom left) and Fenella.

My dog Loki managed to sneak in a couple of shots too. He had a whale of a time that day with so many people around.

The 50s style dresses are all Oh My Honey – designed and made by the lovely Louise of Oh My Honey who you can see below! The dresses fit so well and I just adore those petticoats. They would make perfect bridesmaid dresses for a fifties wedding too.

Laura of Genii Cupcakes made the most fantastic American Diner style cupcakes. The chocolate fudge sundae ones were out of this world, and with her hamburger cakes she showed just how creative you can be with cakes! I was so impressed. She is an artist indeed. She should have a cupcake/cake art exhibition. Oooh now there’s an idea!

spacer spacer Fenella’s gorgeous necklace is a Chez Bec creation with her very Audrey Hepburn vintage style hair comb by the wonderful Jo Barnes. Annabel wore a hair comb by Chez Bec, and Fleur & I wore headbands by the very talented Natasha Jane. I LOVE mine! Bows rule.

Hannah and Jola from Just Heaven were amazing at transforming us from 21st Century into 1950s folk. They also had a little help from the Vintage Cosmetic’s Company’s false eyelashes to help us get those Audrey eyes.

I had great fun with the styling too. Such a shame my mum was on holiday at the time as she would have loved doing it too. In fact most of the props were bits n bobs my mum had, with a little help from her friend who had a fabulous collection of 50s things. Even those sundae glasses are from the 50s! I made the burgers much to the delight of Loki’s nose (and Ant’s, who very patiently kept his eye on Loki all day and made us tea).

And those invitations you spy are by invitation designer & illustrator Lucy Ledger. Love those colours. They went so well with the american diner picnic theme!

It was such a fun day. I have to say we were very lucky with the weather!

So what do you reckon? Does it make you want to have a picnic with your friends? Does it make you want to run in the long grass? Are you suitably 50s-inspired? Let us all know what you think and do leave a comment!

Biggest thanks ever go to Penny & Martin of Tino & Pip Photography, and all the fab people who helped out on the shoot. Please do visit their websites below and show the love!
