Spiritual Life at Bethel

The Bethel University experience is transformative. We see our graduates leave here as changed persons—mature Christ-followers with an authentic faith that is the foundation for their life. They sense a personal calling to build the kingdom in their own community, workplace, church, and family.

Our purpose is to inspire wonder for God’s marvelous creation, and to help students discover and live out His will for their lives. We recognize the Creator’s thumbprint in every human discipline, from chemistry and calculus to history and the arts. We call upon His guidance at game time and mealtime. And we worship Him continuously, through the collective praise of Chapel and Vespers, and the private prayers of our hearts.

In short, spiritual life at Bethel is in and all around us. We want to be a place where you could stop us in the hall and ask for prayer—and we would do so with an open heart. In this environment, every moment brings a new opportunity to grow in Christ and live out His world-changing gospel.

The Journey

Arriving at Bethel, many undergraduates must first examine the faith of their childhood, to forge a new meaningful walk with God. There is no better place to do this than within a supportive covenant community where students are encouraged to confront their tough questions, and are guided toward biblical answers by professors and pastors, classmates and friends.

Bethel seminary students preparing for ministry cultivate deep spiritual foundations and leadership strength while becoming thoroughly knowledgeable in the Bible and theology. Beyond the classroom, their time at Bethel is hands-on training for a fully realized Christian life—one characterized by love, service, worship, and meaningful work.

For our adult students at the Graduate School and in degree completion programs, Christian faith is not a requirement for enrollment, although programs are taught from a Christian worldview and emphasize ethical principles. All students at Bethel are guided into a rewarding professional life that takes responsibility for creation and serves the good of humanity.

Graduation does not mean the end of the journey, but an opportunity to put our personal callings into action—as teachers, doctors, artists, business leaders, missionaries, and more—and to lead a life that is an offering to God.

Spiritual Resources

The Office of Campus Ministries provides numerous opportunities to worship, fellowship and serve at Bethel.

By lending vocal, instrumental, dance, and multimedia talent to UNITED Worship Ministries, students themselves lead in worship experiences.

  • Chapel is the heart and soul of spiritual life on the Bethel campus, and there are services specifically for students in the traditional college, seminary, and adult programs. Christian leaders from around the world join us for chapel to inspire our community as guest speakers.
  • Vespers is an extraordinary, student-led Sunday evening service of praise and commitment drawing thousands of young people from across the Twin Cities.

Residence-based Bible studies and small discipleship groups meet the many spiritual needs of our students—and serve to create tight-knit communities where students celebrate one another’s joys and lift each other up in prayer.

At Bethel, we serve God by serving our neighbors, particularly those on the margins of society. We are humbled by the sacrificial work our students provide through outreach and mission work. Whether they’re helping young kids with homework in a St. Paul neighborhood or learning the cultural customs of a community in Guatemala, Bethel students extend their spiritual life off campus to serve a bigger world.
