The days are cold and short this time of year, but at least we have one bright and exciting occasion to look forward to in this dark month: Valentine’s Day. But with Valentine’s Day as commercialized as it is, there is a good chance that if you dine out, the joint will be packed like sardines with couples trying to enjoy a romantic dinner.

Another reason to avoid going to a restaurant is because often eateries will forgo their usual options for a choice between two or three courses, which means that unless you’re going to a specialty vegan/vegetarian restaurant, you’re almost certain to find mainly meat or dairy products on every menu. So, just forget about it and impress your loved one by cooking! Besides, a home-cooked meal is much more romantic and you can choose whatever veg dishes your vegetarian-influenced little heart desires.

Debate Over Food Stamp Fingerprinting Heats Up in New York

After USDA rebranded food stamps in order to save some of its recipients the sense of humiliation attached to them, New York City is now in the middle of a huge debate over whether food stamp recipients should be fingerprinted.

As NPR reported, the state’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, has been at odds with the city’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg. Cuomo has been a longtime critic of fingerprinting, claiming that it purposely steers needy people away from applying for food stamps. Bloomberg, on the other hand, has argued that the process limits fraud.

The city is the only one in the state that still requires fingerprinting for food stamps. New York is one of two states – the other being Arizona – that institutes the fingerprinting policy. Since then, the public has been divided over whether the process is effective. “It’s basically like when you’re going through central booking or something. You’re getting booked and you feel like you’re getting fingerprinted, with one finger here and one finger there,” said Nicole Cuffee, a food stamp recipient who admitted that she felt stigmatized by the whole process. Today the words ‘traditional cooking’ are getting kicked under the table and traditions from one culture are being reinvented to showcase the diversity of all types of food. It’s no wonder food trucks are serving up Korean Fried Chicken or restaurants popping up in New York City that divulge in the sophisticated nature of French and sushi all wrapped into one. Your Italian grandparents may threaten to disown you after they discover you no longer like the homemade thin-crust pizza and instead have opted for a Hawaiian pizza at your favorite pizza joint. But not to worry, after reviewing these strange, yet captivating twists on traditional cuisines, your grandparents may just cave and taste test the sophisticated foie gras sushi on their next outing.

French Sushi: We all know how sophisticated French cuisine is, and how minuscule and uniquely crafted sushi can be, thus why not combine the two to create somewhat of a masterpiece when it comes to traditional cooking twists. The Sushi Shop, located on Madison Avenue in NYC has reinvented how prestigious the two traditional cuisines can be. The take on this joint is to encompass foie gras laced in sushi, embellish fish tartars and creatively craft unique dishes for all the delicate palates out there. [click to continue…]

Is it just me, or are some of the greatest food memories associated with warm bread? My love affair with bread spans all the way back to childhood. The sweet smell of monkey bread my grandmother pulled out the oven to meet my eager fingers and be pulled apart; sneaking a slice of butter between a biscuit; that final chewy piece of crust of a pizza slice you refused to let go; rosemary and olive oil drizzled on top of focaccia bread; I can’t get enough of it! This proves to me that man, can in fact live on bread alone (or at least I can).

In the wintertime, there’s something about a hearty muffin that evokes warmth and a supreme sense of comfort. Adding fresh vegetables to the bread deepens the intensity of flavor and gives it a texture that works so well, especially when it’s moist. My secret ingredient for moist muffins is fresh applesauce, and with this recipe, it works perfectly. [click to continue…]

Honoring Dr. Maya Angelou

It’s difficult for anyone to celebrate Black History Month and forget the achievements of Dr. Maya Angelou. An eminent civil rights activist and celebrated author, Dr. Angelou experienced the ugliness of racial discrimination firsthand while growing up in Arkansas. Despite her struggles, her rise as an African American pioneer began when she studied in San Francisco and became the city’s first African-American female cable car conductor. Maya, however, had a passion for the arts and soon found herself performing alongside renowned choreographer Alvin Ailey. She also recorded her first album, Calypso Lady.

What ultimately propelled Dr. Angelou to legendary status was her writing. In 1970, after working under the guidance of novelist James Baldwin, she published I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The autobiography detailed her battle with racism and family trouble and went on to win several notable accolades. Following its publication, the memoir has been heralded as a classic piece of American literature, especially that which concerns black feminist writing. [click to continue…]

Chocolate as a High Commodity: The Rising Cost of Cocoa

Have you ever wondered just how precious cocoa, the lovely bean that creates the sweetest treats, really is? Well in today’s day and age, cocoa is costing the industry a whole lot of loot. Neena Rai and Leslie Josephs report that this tasty treat is recovering for an ‘all-time 3-year low’.

As bids were placed to purchase the beans for the 2012-2013 crops, just a couple of days ago it’s now that we realize just how precious this cargo is. The price of cocoa this quarter skyrocketed at $2,300 a ton on the ICE Futures US exchange. With a 3.4% increase from the last trading session, the rise in cocoa was all thanks to the somewhat stronger economy the US has seen at the start of the year. [click to continue…]
