Craft Sticks & Yarn: Book Worms

We got the latest issue of Clubhouse Jrspacer yesterday and I was so excited to see a fun craft inside! It’s a simple bookmark—some bookworms for your own little book worms. But after we made it, I think it works a little better as a fun spider-worm-flag-thingie!

spacer

All you need is some yarn, a craft stick and something to make eyes (we used our old standby: foam pieces). We cut the yarn into  8″ pieces. We used about 24 pieces for each stick/worm.

spacer

To attach the strings 1) fold the yarn in half and place the stick on top. 2) push the ends into the folded side and pull. 3) Take your next string and make another slip-knot on the opposite side. Keep alternating sides until your little worm is full up with legs!

spacer

This took my 5 year old Lydia quite a long time. She really had to think about which side came next, where to place her yarn and then really use her fingers to pull the string through. But she worked hard and was so proud when she was done!

This would be a fun craft to share with your kids’ class during March–since it’s National Reading Month! You could use different colored yarn and make patterns or stripes. I even tried to make patterns on the numbers of legs on each side (see the worm on the right above?) but I ended up liking the even legs best!

So, which book would your book worm end up in?

I saw the craft and I want to make it too! I’ve been under the weather so it will have to wait a while, though.

Those are so cute!
My 18mo will just want to eat the string, so I think this project will need to sit on the idea shelf for a few years spacer

Our Clubhouse Jr is finally arriving, and I loved this one, too… maybe a bit much for a 3 y/o, though, if it was a challenge at 5. Thanks for the head’s up on that.

I think if you did longer pieces of string it would be easier. It wasn’t that she couldn’t do it–it just took her a looong time! spacer
