Posted by natthefatrat on February 9th, 2012 at 4:27 pm

‘Tis the season for over-the-top romantic movies. And hallelujah! There is nothing more satisfying than sitting on the couch with the one you love and a fresh bowl of popcorn. Except maybe for the joy of swooning over the set design and pausing the movie to say to yourself, “OH MY GOSH WHERE CAN I FIND THAT SOFA!?”

After the jump, my favorite rooms inspired by my favorite romantic movies, and sources for those key pieces to recreate those rooms in your own home! This was so fun to put together. I hope you enjoy it!

DIY Valentine Fridge Bunting

Posted by natthefatrat on February 7th, 2012 at 5:14 pm

I was asked earlier by the girls at the Martha Stewart Living blog to come up with a Valentine’s craft you could send off with your kids to give to their classmates.

Obviously, I figured this craft needed to be 1. quick, 2. inexpensive, and 3. not candy-oriented. (Seriously, enough candy! Candy up to my ears!)

After the jump, see what I came up with! A fun, easy craft you can do with your kids (promise!) and display on your fridge for Valentine’s Day and beyond!

After all the excess of the holiday season, a good, refreshing cleanse in January is appealing for more than just physical reasons–think of the money you could save by purchasing only a limited amount of ingredients!

Before you dust that blender off, I’ve put together a quick round up of all the different cleanses available to you, making their rounds on le Interneto (including one that lets you eat REAL FOOD!). Would you ever consider a cleanse? If so, why? Or why not?

Lions And Tigers and Metallic Neons, Oh My!

While stumbling about the Internet one afternoon I discovered these amazing animal figurines on Etsy and just about died. I must have them!

And then it got me thinking: How many of us have kids toys laying about that are no longer age-appropriate or are just sadly neglected? And you’re wondering to yourself, What am I going to do with all this?

Well duh! You are going to spray paint them in neons and metallics! And then they are going to look AWESOME in your house as decor! How very green of you.

After the jump, a quick how-to, some more really rad neon/metallic animals as inspiration, and some ideas on what common toys might look good with this look, to get your creative juices all juicy.

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah! Happy Hanukkah to you!

In my family none of us are Jewish, and yet every year I find myself wishing I were celebrating Hanukkah just the same. It is such a beautiful holiday, with lovely, fun, and meaningful traditions. (And really great food.)

This year we’ve decided to do it! So we’re taking some time each evening at sundown to recite the blessings, spin a dreidel, and light the next candle on the menorah. For those of you interested in celebrating your first Hanukkah along with us, here is a basic primer on all the traditions, how to celebrate, what to eat, and what to give for the next eight nights.

A Budget, Kid-Friendly, Still Pretty Christmas Tree?

Posted by natthefatrat on December 15th, 2011 at 9:17 pm

Christmas time is here!

This year we decided to take the plunge and buy a live tree. Live trees are total bank-busters here in the city, and all of my favorite ornaments from Christmas trees past are in cold storage (boo hoo), so with all of my Christmas tree money spent at the start I had before me a challenge: Trim me up a tree on the super-duper cheap. Also it’d help if nothing on it were too terribly breakable or precious (toddler in the house).

After the jump, it’s lowly little me on camera again (just what you asked Santa for in your letters!) with some budget-friendly kid-friendly pretty-friendly tree tips. Brace yourselves!

Your shopping is done, your stockings are hung. Your tree is trimmed, your holiday cards are even addressed! Go you! Time to sit back with a cup of nog and call it a long winter’s nap, yes?

But wait–what about your holiday tips?!

Before I lived in New York City, I knew nothing about the annual holiday tip. But it turns out, annual tips for those in the service industry whose help we enjoy and employ is yet another holiday tradition. Holiday tips are terribly important, and a good tip is the marker of a good client. It can be tricky though. How much is a enough? How much is too much? Is it different for your hair stylist than for your doorman? Or your dog walker? Your babysitter? What about your favorite barista at Starbucks? (Kidding. Mostly.)

After the jump, a handy infographic to sort out the heads and tails of holiday tipping. You’ll tip with confidence! I promise!
