Registration: $385

spacer In this drawing and embroidery workshop, participants will begin by making a series of fast drawings with pencils and markers.  We'll then explore various ways of translating these marks into slower, hand embroidered drawings and fast, thick machine stitched lines.  Silk organza, found embroidery, and fancy embroidered marks will lead up to pieces that end up being several layers thick and full of color, line, and meaning.  An emphasis on more is more will be encouraged! No drawing or embroidery experience required.

Course Materials:
Please bring your own:

  • Fabric (cotton, linen, repurposed cloth is great, things with embroidery even better!)
  • one or two colors of silk or polyester organza or other sheer fabrics (1/8 yard each)
  • Size 8 Perle Cotton or Embroidery Floss
  • Embroidery Needles (I like Clover the best)
  • Thimble
  • Sharp fabric scissors
  • Sketchbook
  • Pencils or other favorite drawing tools
  • Fine Point Sharpie
  • Washable Glue Stick (large size or two or three small size)
  • Sewing machine (if you don't have one, please convo us)

Rebecca Ringquist is a Brooklyn-based visual artist. Her drawings on paper and stitched drawings on fabric explore issues of identity through thinly veiled metaphors utilizing old fashioned imagery and double entendres.

In 2005, Rebecca was awarded an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship. Her work has been exhibited at the Hyde Park Art Center, The California Polytechnic University, ARC Gallery, Fraction Workspace, Northern Illinois University, The Textile Art Center in Brooklyn, and is currently represented by the Packer Schopf Gallery in Chicago.

Ringquist earned her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Fiber and Material Studies department where she subsequently taught for seven years. She teachers, lectures and exhibits nationally.
