Freezer Packs, High Chairs and Bike Trailers Top January’s Recall List
by Jennifer on February 9, 2012 · 0 comments

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced 25 recalls in January, including one expansion of a previously recalled bicycle. While that is slightly more than the 23 recalls we saw in December, it is still lower than we typically see this time of year. Over the past five years, the CPSC has issued an average of 33 recalls in January. It is still too early to predict a decline in recalls for 2012, but we will be watching closely.
Of the 25 products recalled by the CPSC in January, eight, or 32%, were children’s products. Three of those products topped 100,000 units recalled, including Lunch Kits, High Chairs and Bicycle Trailers.
California Innovations (a Canadian company) recalled soft-pack lunch boxes and insulated food carriers because the freezer packs that were included with the containers are filled with toxic gel. The gel freezer packs are either blue or clear plastic with blue gel. The word “Cryofreeze” is printed on the outside. Read More

Getting Serious About Eating Disorders

Every time I teach my students about eating disorders, I end by sharing the memorial wall on this site. The wall displays over 600 candles lit in memory of men and women who have died from an eating disorder. A name is printed beneath each candle and you can click on any of those names and read what family and friends have written. Although I believe it is a powerful way to emphasize the seriousness of these conditions, I can hardly push back my own tears long enough to scroll down the page. I can’t even imagine the pain of losing a child, and kids who die of eating disorders are often very young. I would like to dispel some of the mythology that surrounds eating disorders in this post, and then follow it with another post next week on spotting the signs and prevention. Read More

The Pajama Bottom Problem

Let me start this post off by saying that I am all for schools enacting dress codes. I have no problems with the schools that have banned make-up and have minimum length requirements for skirts and shirts. Maybe I sound like a crotchety old lady, but kids, especially girls, these days dress way too provocatively. Even the loosest girls I knew didn’t dress half as bad as a lot of good girls do today.
It drives me crazy. And just thinking that in ten years my daughter will be out there sends me into a panic attack. But there is one dress code issue that is starting to pop up in high schools here in the U.S. that I can’t get behind.
The banning of pajamas bottoms. Read More

6 Ways to Prevent Sibling Rivalry

When siblings fight, everyone in the family is affected. When a parent hears, “Give it to me!” “Get away from me!” or “No, m-i-n-e!” their first reaction is to yell, “Stop it!” or “How many times have I told you!”
Many parents with more than one child have told me: “They fight terribly. . .They will play happily for ten minutes and then the fighting begins again.” Sound familiar?
Kids fight for many reasons. Just like everything else in childhood, the underlying reason kids fight is that they need to learn something.
What Can Kids Possibly Learn from Fighting?
If you were to look at a family tree you’d see that siblings are listed on the same arm of the tree. That means they are of equal status when it comes to the rules in a family. But the sibling relationship is bigger than that. It’s actually a child’s first opportunity to learn about and prepare for long-term relationships. Read More

Valentine’s Day – Not Just for Lovers

I hope you get a chance to do something special with your special someone this weekend or on Valentine’s Day. A little time away from the kids can relieve a lot of stress. For the family, making the day special doesn’t require tons of planning or money. Kids see any effort on your part as a sign of love, and what better day to remind them of that than Valentine’s Day.
When the girls were young, we decorated the table, pulled out the fine china and the crystal goblets, and opened a bottle of sparkling cider. I usually prepared a heart-shaped dessert, something strawberry most years. My friend, Peggy, always makes “the traditional heart-shaped meatloaf”, as she calls it, an entrée that might appeal to my husband, but not the girls. Although, I think that I could have made just about anything into a heart, and they would have relished in my creativity. Thank goodness hearts are so easy to make (especially with cookie cutters or cake pans), because I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler! Read More

Mommy Services

Remember the 80s sitcom Growing Pains? Well there was one episode where the teenage son, Mike, wanted to live on his own as an adult. So to give Mike a taste of what it would be like his parents started charging him for rent and meals and laundry, etc. If I’m not mistaken this also happened with Theo on an episode of The Cosby Show and an episode of Family Ties as well. No scratch that, not Family Ties. I’m pretty sure Alex had more money than his parents so it never would’ve been an issue. But I digress.
At the time I remember thinking those episodes were silly and funny. But now, as a parent myself, I can’t help but look back on those episodes. And now I’m wondering at what age I can start charging my kids for all that I do. Heck, maybe even start charging my husband for my cleaning and cooking services. Read More

The Tooth Fairy Strikes
by Meghan H. on February 3, 2012 · 10 comments

The last few months before Christmas my 6-year-old had been getting antsy. She was one of the last kids in her first grade class who had not yet lot her first tooth. She kept asking me when she would finally lose a tooth, and though I continued to assure her that eventually she would, I could tell that she was beginning to wonder if she’d ever receive a visit from the tooth fairy.
Then luckily, a few days before Christmas, she finally lost that first tooth. Of course my daughter had to write a long letter to the tooth fairy with very specific questions that had to be answered. So that night, half-asleep, I wrote a note back answering her questions. Questions like, “What do you do with all those teeth?” and “Do you know Tinkerbell?” I left a pinch of fairy dust under her pillow along with two gold coins and the note. Read More
