The Last Mile of Service is the First Mile of Sales

How many salespeople do you know that would go to immense lengths to get an in-person meeting with a prospect or customer? I know quite a few. In fact, I’m sitting next to some right now.
Now tell me, who in your company actually gets to see customers face-to-face on a regular basis? Yes, you guessed it, field service techs.
Just because they fix things, doesn’t mean they can’t sell things — especially when they are incentivized the right way. In fact, being so knowledgeable about the products they are servicing means they should be able to sell them in a very intelligent… Continue Reading →

FieldConnect San Diego… and Paul Allen’s Yacht?

This past Tuesday was ServiceMax’s most recent installment of FieldConnect in San Diego, and we had an unexpected visitor — Paul Allen’s yacht! (Sorry, it was too dark for photos). He tried to come to dinner, but we had to tell him: field service pros only… Kidding!
Even without Paul we had a fantastic group of folks join us at Island Prime from companies like Xerox, Skytron, Elekta, Brainlab and more. It was a great event on the beautiful San Diego bay and conversation ranged from the importance of service powering sales to carne asada fries, a regional San Diego delic… Continue Reading →

From Fruit Ninja to Field Service: Work Hard, Play Hard on the iPad

Posted on January 6, 2012 by Jeremy Frank

You wake up every morning, have coffee, get in your car and go to work. And so does the iPad — though, hopefully minus the coffee. Everyone knows about how they can watch Sunday Night Football, read books and slice virtual fruit on their iPad, but what happens when it rolls up its sleeves and gets to work?
Tom Kaneshige from CIO Magazine has a great blog about Apple and the iPad in the enterprise. Suffice it to say, he has plenty to write about. He recently listed 15 ways the iPad goes to work, with #11, field service, as our personal favorite. Others include aviation, military and even spiritual… Continue Reading →

Rethinking the Old, Pioneering the New, and Building for the Long-Term

You know those benefits meetings where HR talks about a bunch of confusing numbers and plans and acronyms that 99.9% of us don’t completely understand? We had one of those this week at ServiceMax, but this time it was different. Every U.S. employee was offered a free healthcare plan. That’s right, $0 deducted from our paychecks, no matter how big or small our families are. Unheard of, and not an easy feat. Equally as impressive was how much time and effort Dave, our CEO, put in to make it work.
I’m not writing this to brag about our great benefits plan, but sitting in that meeting… Continue Reading →

Buy or Build? For Field Service, the Answer is Clear

Posted on December 8, 2011 by Jeremy Frank

Many of our customers originally came to us with “internal build” on their list of options for a future roll-out of field service technology. What’s attractive about this option? It’s kind of like buying a house where you know you’ll be able to build each and every room exactly how you want it. The kitchen, the walk-in closet, the media room — all just how you pictured them.
But, for anyone who has ever done home improvement construction, what seems so clear prior to development, becomes far more complex, time-intensive and expensive than originally th… Continue Reading →

It was a whirlwhind of a day in New York yesterday. Not only were the president and Justin Bieber in town, but the yearly Rockefeller Center tree lighting happened, and ServiceMax held our first New York based FieldConnect event.
It was another great success, we’re really rolling now! This time we gathered at The Park in the Meatpacking District and after a short talk by Jack Mori of Mindray, a ServiceMax customer, we all chowed down on some great food and drinks.
Next up is Atlanta — we’re taking FieldConnect to the South! Stay tuned for more details.

Is Apple Warming to the Enterprise or is the Enterprise Warming to Them?

Posted on November 18, 2011 by Jeremy Frank

Nick Wingfield of the New York Times says that Apple is warming up to the business and enterprise market, but isn’t it the other way around?
Steve Jobs never really saw a benefit in developing for the enterprise market. The success of his products were the result of identifying what end-users really wanted before they even knew it, and developing for the enterprise often requires integrating inputs and suggestions from the potential end users which ends up defining the product roadmap.
What has happened in the past few years is that companies can no longer avoid supporting Apple produc… Continue Reading →
