About Us

For more than 20 years, Alive Communications has represented a select group of authors who are the best of the best. They top the New York Times best-seller list and win big awards. They are on the covers of magazines. They appear on national newscasts and programs. They write books that matter, that change lives. Our authors don’t rest on their laurels and neither do we. We are agents of change.

Located in Colorado Springs, Alive Communications is ultimately known by the company we keep. Our success can be measured in a number of ways:

  • Best-sellers. More than a dozen books represented by Alive Communications have reached the #1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list. Almost 100 of our titles a year appear on this and other prestigious lists, including USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly, The Wall Street Journal and more.
  • Sales. Combined sales of books negotiated by Alive agents exceed 150 million copies. Several dozen Alive titles have sold more than one million copies each. Each year, Alive agents negotiate hundreds of book and sub-right sales with dozens of publishers in the United States and around the world.
  • Awards. Alive authors have been honored with many prestigious awards, including the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize. Our authors are also regularly profiled in national media.

Notwithstanding such recognition, the heart of Alive Communications is a love for words, and for discovering and serving today’s best, most gifted authors. Alive agents all come from publishing backgrounds, and their love for the craft is evident. By serving the message and the messenger well, Alive Communications ensures that each author grows professionally to the next level.

Alive agents are individuals with proven track records in the industry. They are known for their love of words, strategic thinking, negotiation skills, business acumen, relational abilities, and marketing savvy. They represent authors in a wide variety of genres: adult fiction and non-fiction (self-help, biography, theology, memoir), youth/teen fiction and non-fiction, children’s, gift books, and more. Alive’s authors’ works are showcased wherever books are sold—from independent booksellers to national chains and mass merchandisers, from catalogs to grocery stores, airports to web sites.

Alive Communications was founded in 1989 by Rick Christian, a Stanford University graduate who wrote several best-selling books while working for national magazines. He is joined by agents Lee Hough, Andrea Heinecke, and Joel Kneedler. The agency’s effectiveness has earned national press attention in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, and Christianity Today. We are widely written about, reported on, blogged about, even twittered on.
